    Phil Capelle?

In my opinion Capelle's books are the best general instructional books out there. Byrne's are good but they are mostly a catalogue of shots. Capelle goes into interesting detail about all aspects of the game, gives solid advice, and is an entertaining read for a pool nut. His sections on...

    Pool instruction review

There should be a good instructor in almost every state; any BCA certified instructor with decent experience should be worth the time if you are looking to improve standard areas, i.e. fundamentals, shot selection, position play. When I was younger, I took lessons with Mark Maryo, a former pro...

Going to Brookline, Mass...where can I play?

In that neck of the woods I would say Boston Billiards is still the way to go. Brighton billiards has closed down. You might be able to take a bus to Somerville and visit Good Time Emporium, an old-style joint with about 72 tables in mediocre shape and free pool until 6pm. I recommend...

Best People To Gamble With In Your State.

In Canton, give Ben Zimmer a try for the dough. Around Cleveland, aside from JR gay, there is the former owner of Shark Key , his name is dave, and Kenny K. In Boston, there is plenty of action. Go to any weekly tourney in the area and you will find plenty of european immigrants who cut their...

That silky feel of the new shaft.....

Here is my method, I haven't found anything that works better so far: Wipe down the shaft with a damp paper towel to open up the grain. Wipe down with isopropyl alcohol to remove any chalk or crap. Wipe down with Ronsonol lighter fluid to remove any remaining gunk and close the grain up. To...

    Tapes of Fong Pang Chao?

For sheer drama, the 2001 ICOC finals between Bustamante and Chao are unbeatable; both make amazing shots, and the final tie-breaker rack has more jaw-droppers than you will see in many a match.

They give *you* lessons when you beat them?

I've had the opposite happen as well; someone asks for advice on some matter during a game, and after giving some pointers I shoot like a drunk blind man.

    Efren Reyes

The reason the filipinos, and many others, address the ball at a different location than their final stroke is so that they can see the exact spot on the cue ball they are going to strike without the cue being in the way.

    stiff?

I do not switch cues depending on the game. I would think switching cues would screw with your stroke; you would have to change the feel of your stroke to get the same amount of movement on the ball depending upon the cue, and that is preventing you from getting in your game and staying there...

    stiff?

As mentioned above the hit of a cue is a subjective experience. For example, how much wrist you use will change the feel of a cue. No wrist give a "stiffer" feel and lots of wrist whip gives a "softer" feel. So, what feels stiff to one person can feel entirely different to another. A good...

Could Willie Mosconi have been better with Modern Pool Equipment

To answer the question about Efren's shaft: The cue Efren originally played with a maple shaft made from the wood of a bowling alley floor. It was said to have an extremely stiff hit. For a while he played with a Meucci on contract, then went on to use a number of custom cues. Lately he...

    Breathing and shooting pool.

You guys that have techniques for breathing have to be joking. An old, cliche hustle is to ask a guy you are playing whether he breathes in or out when he shoots, and hope your comment sharks his playing. I bet the poster of this thread had someone ask him that as a shark move and he took it...

    Embarrasing Acne Problem

Check Trudeau's book....I'm sure he'll recommend something like a tylenol or a flintstone's vitamin that will make you break out like the surface of the moon.

Wow people, read the whole thread before you post, or at least beyond the initial post. This was a joke.

CJ Wiley plays in IPT qualifier

In the list of players who participated in the most recent IPT qualifier I noticed CJ Wiley's name. This has to be the first "big" event he has played in since leaving the pool scene in the 90's; did anyone get a chance to see him play? He was definitely a powerhouse, and if he makes a...

Joss Tour Ocean State Championship In Progress

He definitely has a personality. If he makes it to the national stage I think it will be good for the sport; when he is at the table he is as serious as can be, and is one of those guys that just looks cool shooting. Off the table he didn't ever seem short of words.

    stance

I would say its counterproductive to completely change your stance depending on the game; find one that works for you and stick with it. You will find that you naturally stand up or get down for certain shots, but deliberately changing your stance one day to the next will only introduce...
