    The 'Feel' of the shot

We use feel all the time in every activity we engage in. How do you know how much pressure to apply to the gas pedal or brake, how much to turn the wheel for a given curve? How do you make your fingers hit the right key when you are typing? It's all feel. On the table, it takes a little longer...

    What's your pet peeve?

How about the guy that misses his pocket by a foot or more but then barely misses lucking it in off the third rail and curses his bad luck...

    Practice makes perfect.

If you are used to just shooting balls during practice, another variant you can try is playing a few games of 8 ball using only left english or right english. It teaches you about compensation and what will happen to the cue ball for more shots than you can dream up to practice.

    What's your pet peeve?

People who talk when they should be shooting. Drives me nuts. I'm all for conversation, but wait until between games or shoot first, talk later. Grammar and spelling errors are annoying to me, also. My current pet peeve in that regard is the rampant use of 's when pluralizing and no 's when...

    2,000,000 + Balls. How many....

I have well over half a million in my lifetime, but figure I am closing in on half a million over the past 3+ years of playing nearly every day.

    Adjusting to different Speeds

Once you've figured out whether the table is playing fast or slow, immediately make an adjustment to your speed, i.e. table is fast, shoot softer than you normally would until you get it down; table is slow, play everything harder than you normally would until you get it down. Works for me...

Pool Is Always Gonna Pay Less Than Ping Pong

At the pool hall my team plays league out of last week, big poster announcing... Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament!!! It didn't make any sense to me when I read it. Kind of like a Pick a Number Between 1 and 10 Tournament. I guess if there is $50k to be made, I better sharpen my already mad...

    Looking for input

Thanks, Scott. From my experience, it seems that there is a zone between the two shots I diagrammed where the double kiss is unavoidable. If the object ball is between say half an inch up to maybe two balls off the rail and the cue ball is in the right (or wrong, lol) position, I can't draw it...

    Looking for input

Thanks for the replies, guys. I didn't mean to make this about "the" particular shot that I posted, but any cross side bank where the cue ball is below the natural angle and the cut up the long rail is unavailable. I was looking for generic rules of thumb for how far the object ball is from...

    Looking for input

I'd like to generate a discussion about this bank shot: In my experience, I've found that using low inside English and some speed, I can make this type of shot with some consistency. Problems I've encountered are drawing the cue ball into the pocket after the object ball when the bank angle...

    Finally coming around....wait....maybe not

Well, that's a tough question. For me, the hardest thing I've attempted to overcome is my bad habits. It's a never ending struggle. If I had to pin down a few things that have seemed to really help, they would be (in no particular order): pause before final stroke, staying down, getting lower on...

OK, so my last post has me asking myself????

I used to ride a bicycle and have noticed many parallels between pool and bicycling. There are probably more people in the US that have ridden/ride a bicycle than play pool but there is little interest in the sport here. Europe is gaga over bicycling and pool/snooker. The big difference over...

Does breaking off of a piece of cloth lose your control?

I use one as well. Up until a couple of nights ago, I was just happy to not have the burn marks. I was practicing Colin's power break after just having a phenolic tip installed and miscued badly twice in a row. There are now two holes in my break cloth that are thankfully not in my table cloth...

OK, so my last post has me asking myself????

I have to say that I don't like posts like this (just a personal thing). The OP was asking people who "cheat" to step forward and say why they play. It is very obvious that he has a low opinion of this kind of person, so anyone who steps into the breach is going to get flamed. I have to admit...

OB or not OB that is the question

Maybe you should expand your vocabulary. There are plenty of people in the USA that pot balls and refer to it that way on occasion. The OB-1 shaft does what it is supposed to do and that is to be radially consistent and low deflection. It's not intended to be for everyone, nor should it be...

    Warm up before league

The only league I've played in where it really made a difference is APA masters. Usually you are sitting for a while before you play even if you do have time to warm up so it didn't really do any good, except to get a feel for the table if you are lucky enough to be able to warm up on the match...

When is it ok to quit as a winner?

I like the omitted option of quit whenever it suits you.
