O'Sullivan Talks about Chinese 8-Ball in the future

https://metro.co.uk/2024/07/16/ronnie-osullivan-eyeing-pinnacle-another-sport-snooker-retirement-21241699/ Probably not overly serious, but given the money on offer its not surprising snooker players are starting to take notice!

    Barry Hearn

Yeah, that is very much the case, people are very open about it and as you say, you can smell it everywhere, but it is still illegal technically.

Pot is not legal in the UK!!! The police turning a blind eye, is not the same thing as it being legal.

    UK Too Slow

True, but for the Matchroom run events it should be possible. The World Snooker Tour has a standard table supplied by Star and the pockets are meant to be identical, based on a template (even then there is plenty of discussion about how they play looser or tighter). So there's no reason why...

    The Reyes Cup

Ha maybe! But joking aside, the Mosconi Cup works as Matchoom can engineer a them vs us mentality for the fans, not sure if that would be possible with The Philippines vs Asia, but maybe.

    The Reyes Cup

I think thats just the logical assumption isn't it (i.e. the winner of the Mosconi Cup, rather than always Europe)? That said, I would have preferred The Philippines vs Asia as the Reyes Cup. They could always have the winner of the two then meet!

    End of the US Open?

    I totally agree!

    End of the US Open?

Yep absolutely, but no longer! From a spectator perspective professionalism is good for the game and amateurs can still qualify in similar fashion to golf, so I think its a positive change personally!

    End of the US Open?

That can't happen. All 128 signed up pros are entered into the draw, amateurs can only gain entry via qualification or if they have enough ranking points on the top up list if one or more of the 128 players choose not to enter.

    End of the US Open?

I don't think (or at least not most) amateurs think that, however pool is fairly unique in that in short races a decent amateur could beat a pro. In most sports that simply couldn't happen, but in short race 9-Ball it can and that is the attraction. Amateurs know they aren't going to win the...

    End of the US Open?

I think thats already been done.... https://www.welcometosheffield.co.uk/visit/headline-events/world-snooker-championship/ It sells out every year, people buy tickets the day after the final for the following year!

OMG, Now snooker maximum break is 167

But this genuinely is a pointless gimmick, the new ball can only be pot if a player has already cleared the balls for a 147, so it adds absolutely nothing!

Million dollar prize fund for 2024 world pool championship

Yes, basically whatever was shown on the BBC was defined as a major, so when they stopped showing the Grand Prix it quietly lost that status (although of course it was never 'official' as such anyway). There are plenty of contenders, I would argue the Tour Championship is a good one too and the...

How to improve the popularity of pool?

That is literally what Matchroom do, they have their designated 'Matchroom Major's, I think the Spanish Open is on the list rather than Manilla and of course they include the World Championship too (and the Masters plus World Cup are high profile too, albeit not part of the regular tour). They...

Why the Best Players Want Tight Pockets

In the UK we get virtually every tournament covered live and believe me, there is discussion about the pockets almost every time. Of course the pockets are supposed to be identical, as there is a template, however this is what creates the discussion topic. Despite theoretically being identical...

Why the Best Players Want Tight Pockets

Pretty much every tournament :ROFLMAO: Its a constant discussion topic between the commentators...and those pockets theoretically are identical!!!

How to improve the popularity of pool?

Absolutely, the US has a huge disadvantage here due to very strict rules around alcohol. In the UK and continental Europe its far easier for under 18's to go to a pool hall and play, they can't (legally) buy alcohol (I'm generalising on age here, I appreciate in some European countries the age...

Jayson Shaw First Contracted Pro on WNT

Interesting to see snooker pro Gary Wilson signing up for the World Nineball Tour! Particularly interesting as he's had a very good couple of years in snooker: https://cuetracker.net/players/gary-wilson/career-total-statistics I presume given Matchroom have a controlling stake in World...

    Playing sets vs races

Maybe my memory is fading, but didn't some of the early years of the Mosconi Cup use sets?

    The Reyes Cup

Not as marketable, this attracts far more broadcast interest from around Asia in particular. Its possible in future years it could be Asia vs the Mosconi Winners, I suspect at the moment its Europe as they want it to be competitive, but as soon as the US up their game it wouldn't be a surprise...
