Playing sets vs races

Baseball is fun because there are 3 strikes to an out or 1 hit for a homerun.

The outcomes of what happens between are clear.

Pool does not have that continuum between most defensive strategy and most offensive strategy.

Its more like volleyball for the beginners, any hit is a good hit based on the ref.

A game to nine ball, first to the 3, first to the 6 and whoever gets the 9. That is a more manageable score progression.

Of the three game balls make 2.
Again, WTF??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Its called lecturing. Your not supposed to react publicly.

You are supposed to say, what if .... because ... then promote at your pool room ...

This a training for promotions. How old are you? Under 60 or under 40?

The World Cup of Darts just finished and they play sets: first to win X sets. Every set is a best of 5 legs (games).

In pool we usually play a race to X games.

The advantage of playing sets is that players have fresh chances every new set.

Any experience with tournaments where pool is played as sets? Is there a reason we don't/hardly play sets?
For most tournaments, races would have to be relatively short if you are playing first to win two sets or three sets. It’s just not practical for most larger tournaments. Double elimination and longer single sets works better for most tournaments.

Huh?? I'm still confused here, kinda like the rules to that goofy game you dreamed up. ;) A race/set are same thing. Stop mixing/matching the terms. What you are proposing are 'matches' made up of multiple 'sets/races'. Have to keep it fairly short/simple if you want anyone other than die-hards to watch.
Goofy? That's the future of pool you're talking about! 😄 (20th of January the first ever tournament, I hope to livestream a table)

What would be your alternative word for it? In tennis and darts the games/legs make up a set and with enough sets you win the match.

I understand the confusion given the existing meaning. But what other word would fit?

Don't give a flying fk what snooker/dart uses. Last time there sparky: a 'SET' and a 'RACE' are the same thing. A' MATCH' is made up of SETS/RACES. Stop with the leg shit 'cause no one knows wtf you're talking about.

Yeah for such tournaments it might not be useful.

Race to 5: min 5, max 9 racks
Race to 6: min 6, max 11
Race to 7: min 7, max 13
Race to 8: min 8, max 15
Race to 9: min 9, max 17
Race to 10: min10, max 19
Race to 11: min 11, max 21
Race to 12: min 12, max 23
Race to 13: min 13, max 25

Race to two seds Bo5 (I dub it a seD to prevent confusion): min 6, max 15
Rt Three seds: min 9, max 25
Rt Four seds: min 12, max 35

With shoot out:
Rt 2 seds: min 6, max 10 + SO
Rt 3 seds: min 9, max 20 + SO
Rt 4 seds: min 12, max 30 + SO

You mean 'SETS'?????????????? These match lengths are too long for a TD to get an event done on time. Don't have a month like the WorldSnookerChamp's. What is this obsession with re-inventing the game or how tourn's are run? Your game is not gonna go anywhere and long matches will never fly due to time constraints.

I like a simple race like it is now. Predator is doing the sets, and its too hard to follow what the current "count" is as a spectator.

I thought you where against the use of sets in this context. A wait I get it now. Either way:

A TD that wants to try rack-set-match instead of a race could see what is more or less the same in length.

Normally race to 7? = race to 2 sets, Bo5.
Normally race to 10 = race 3 sets + SO.

Not saying this has to be done in every tournament. Might be fun for some televised tournaments.

You make zero sense. Goodbye and welcome to the ignore pile.

Sets are good in the early rounds, with breaks between sets.
It allows the weaker players to not have to pay for extra days hotel rooms and allows them to get in the mix and maybe get to other rounds.
When you're coming up in skill levels, you must/have to/and will pay your dues.
But to give it (due$$) to the hotel and the high-priced food vendors, that should be your choice not the venues decision.
It will then allow you to continue your journey and keep costs down to have more ability to attend more events.

Maybe my memory is fading, but didn't some of the early years of the Mosconi Cup use sets?

There's not much time for sets in pool. Predator does first to win 2 with that stupid tiebreaker spot shot.

Gambling by sets is the norm....I've been in 4 day tournaments with people many times.

If you have a limited amount of time that the match can take, sets are a poor way to determine the better player. A player can be behind on aggregate score and still win the set format: 0-5. 0-5. 5-4. 5-4. 5-3 -- aggregate is 15-21. Also, the shortest match (in that format) is 15-0 while the longest ends up at 23-22 aggregate. That's a large variation in possible match length even if you don't factor in two slow players going hill-hill-hill-hill-hill.

The set format used in the Predator events doesn't have as much problem because there are always two sets (early rounds) but it is still a little less efficient at separating wheat from chaff than a single race would be within the same time requirements.

3-cushion used sets (first to 3 of 15 points) for years but I think they gave it up due to the time/scheduling issue. Also at 3-C it didn't permit very long runs.

In tennis (or darts) it also happens. E.g. A player losing 7-6, 0-6, 7-6. At most a commentator would mention the losing player won more games, but in general it is seen as a legitimate loss.

As for the length: in post 27 it seems that sets can be choosen to kind of match the length. But you're right, there is (slightly) more variation. And if the field is large the extremes will make everyone wait.

Not trying to be argumentative, just curious why some sports do have such a format and others, like pool, don't. I guess it's usually a best practice becoming the norm.
