why ain't my tangent lines tangent?

Ball inelasticity is definitely noticeable at the table, especially with older balls. I find I have to adjust by 3-5 degrees to account for it in 3-cushion depending on ball condition. However, since you notice the difference only on harder shots, I suspect that Andrew Manning is right and...

Congratulation to AZ'ers own Robert Raiford

Heh - so it's a race to see who's booted first... Nothing like a little friendly competition to motivate improving our tournament play! :) Robert

Congratulation to AZ'ers own Robert Raiford

Thanks, Rick, I'm glad you've found my comments helpful. Thanks to the positive feedback from last year's videos, Jan was nice enough to invite me back this year to help out with CaromTV again. If you'd like to see more, please email Jan at CaromTV and let him know! (After I managed to squeak...

Congratulation to AZ'ers own Robert Raiford

Thanks, guys! Now my goal is to improve my tournament play enough to get booted from the "B" tour. Easier said than done :) Robert

Why is Caroms not so popular in America?

I live on the other coast in Miami. However, Pedro Piedrabuena (the current US champion) lives in San Diego now, and you can find him at College Billiards where he is one of the owners. The address is 5303 El Cajon Blvd. There will be a tournament there Sept. 8 & 9, so maybe you can stop by...

Video of Falcon vs Ceulemans 158 minutes

I believe you were allowed a certain number of deliberate safeties in the days of Hoppe and Cochran, but not in 1998! :) Although Ceulemans is known for being a defensive player, that was most certainly a miscue. He was frozen to the cushion trying a very delicate short angle shot, and just...

Video of Falcon vs Ceulemans 158 minutes

Btw, the poster of these videos lives in Spain, and his blog (in Spanish) can be found here: Entrada51 He tends to go into more detail about the videos there. Also, you won't believe what he told me is coming soon: a video of Eddy Leppens running 25!!! Robert

    Post your high run

I see you won the NJ event as well. No wonder you are working so hard to get these tournaments together - you're winning all of them! :) The Billiard Gods always tease us just enough to keep us playing this ridiculous game. At least we get to enjoy the illusion of billiard greatness from...

    3 Cushion Break Shots

Hi Jim, it's good to see you showing up around here! I've diagrammed the two shots you mentioned, the one Mark described from the guy at Tiff's, as well as six more crazies (cuetable is fun - I couldn't help myself): 9 More Ways To Lose the Opening Break Advantage I just thought of the last...

    Reyes in Florida in 1981?

It may have been Carlos Hallon. Robert Edit: maybe not - I missed the snooker champ part at the end the first time. Carlos was 1982 US champ in 3-cushion, and I've heard he used to rob everyone in golf on a 6x12 in those days. I'm not so sure about actual snooker, though.

Fake it till you make it.

Yep, "Mental Toughness Training for Sports" was the first Loehr book I read. I found it more interesting than the other two, but I got useful bits out of them also. Loehr mentions in the later books how important it is to go beyond just the mental training as described in his first book to...

    3 Cushion Break Shots

Speaking of crazy break shots, I diagrammed a few more here: 6 Guaranteed Ways to Lose the Opening Break Advantage Good thing I don't live in Europe. :) Robert

Fake it till you make it.

I agree. It's definitely cool when that happens, and it was nice to see you arrive at the same conclusion independently. I find that re-inventing the wheel can sometimes be more relevant and meaningful, rather than simply reading a result somewhere, because you are more personally invested in...

Fake it till you make it.

Sports psychologist Dr. James Loehr has been advocating this technique for at least 15 years in his "Toughness Training" books, which are guides to applying the results of his own research and that from the literature towards achieving what he calls I.P.S. (Ideal Performance State). They...

Online video of Dani Sanchez running 18 in 3-cushion!

I just posted this link the Carom section, but I thought it might be of wider interest here. It's the longest 3-cushion run I've seen anywhere online by far: Dani vs Palazon The full match is 49:20, but if you want to skip ahead (shame on you :)), the 18 is basically the last part of the...

Online video of Dani Sanchez running 18!

This is from the same series that billiardshot's Blomdahl video comes from, but I thought I'd mention it specifically since it's the longest run I've seen anywhere online by far. Dani vs Palazon The full match is 49:20, but if you want to skip ahead, the 18 is basically the last part of the...

    3 Cushion Break Shots

I would think the 2nd diagram, since it's the only one shown scoring. :) I believe the Japanese text below the diagrams attempts to explain problems when playing the break, like what causes missing long/short or getting a kiss. It looks like they keep the hit the same (the red paths only...

    Here a young Blomdahl Video

Thanks for the link to the vids, that's quite a find! However, that looks pretty recent. Caudron is playing on the next table without glasses (i.e. post-surgery), and Dani Sanchez is in the far corner with a recognizable amount of hair :) Robert

Why doesn't the object ball seem to overcut when using extreme low English?

Stunning into the OB will cause more throw than extreme draw or follow at OB contact, especially around 1/2-ball hit like your diagram. The 1-tip shot could have been sliding when it hit the OB, giving it max throw for that cut angle. The 2-tip shot still had significant draw at contact...
