Mike, I dip mine earlier at around 0.950, would it have any effect on what stage you dip the cue? I know some cuemakers dip the woods and the whole cue a few thousandths before final size... would this have any effect on glues, metal rings etc? What about for an all wood cue? Thanks, Hadj

What you could do is burnish the shaft, using a smooth piece of leather while spinning on the lathe. You could apply Rennaissance wax after.

Just a folow up question for the experienced cuemakers : If let's say 5 cuemakers would build a plane jane cue, of the same type of wood, equal specs... same pin, etc. The only difference maybe in the the way a cue was joined (A-joint in particular... threaded all wood, with a bolt etc.) Would...

Very well said Chris... it's good that the cuebuying public know that custom cuemakers do their very best to produce a shaft that will play right and stay straight the longest possible time if not forever, and care and research along with certain procedures are taken to insure this.

You could start out by getting from wood either from Chris or Blud so you'll get an idea of what quality of wood you should get if you plan to look for a supplier of your own down the road. For a first time out go for the sure thing. I believe Chris still has those wood combo packages available...

Are you talking about drilling tapping the hole in the forearm, and making a dummy bar/drive on the jp thing you mentioned, except without the pin glued in the cue? Yeah that's it. Btw, using spur drives ain't good. The piece could slip and that's it... gone.. :D As for drilling a straight...

Horizontal spinning... the vertical position would have gravity acting on you finish and it would eventually slide IMO. I haven't seen one yet set up vertically Hadj

Greg, ey buddy! :D I've seen centered drilled pins on some radials. You have to assume though that the pin was put in straight and concentric with the cue. I'm very careful when having a finished cue between centers... specially on the pin itself. What I do on the joint part bore a dowel...

I've used those and even done some scrimshaw with it lately. I haven't had any problems with it as a joint or buttcap but ferrules do crack and deflect a ton :D

This was before the final finishing took place... hard when you only get to borrow a cam when it's available... and need it when it's unavailable... The ziricote's color is somewhat greyish-greenish with black steaks... the color didn't show on the pics... any tips on lighting??? Hadj

update Made to specs just like what Mike webb advised... Ziricote forearm, smooth black leather wrap, Ziricote buttsleeve with granadillo buttcap... 42" cue with 0.850" at the joint 12mm shaft :D african Mahogany JP - cored with maple for stability :D :p :cool: Can't get the lighting...
