How do we create consistency in our pool game?

I think that this comment is a little harsh - and unnecessary. Playing this game to a high standard consistently is difficult. Understanding how to play the game to a high standard consistently is even more difficult. And explaining it to someone else is worse still. There are many expert...

In a pool context, when does the 'action' start?

One of the best match performances ever: VIDEO

Yes the cut of the side pockets on an English-pool table is easier. You can pocket balls in them from quite an acute angle.

Typically 8 or 9 mm tip, ash or maple shaft (conical taper). Ebony or rosewood butt. Joint & ferrule are usually brass. Weight varies quite a bit, from 16 to 19 oz usually.

    Masters of Cue Sports

I agree with what others have said - it seems an impossible task, and any list will be argued about. But if you are going to include cue sports other than pool (some of which are as old or significantly older than pool), and if you are going to take account of both skill and impact, then 3 that...

    The natural angle...

Some good advice in terms of drills already given. But focusing on the 'basics', by which I mean fundamentals, or stroke technique, is also very important. It is not how many balls you hit that matters, but how consistently you hit them. This depends on developing a consistent stroke. If you...

The "Million Dollar Article" by Jerry Forsyth

Quite. When all our chatter from the sidelines has evaporated, what remains is one hell of an achievement. I mean plenty of us have played in situations that were stressful in some way; but can you imagine getting to 6, 7 or 8 B&Rs, knowing that if you keep it going you get $1 million? And...

The "Million Dollar Article" by Jerry Forsyth

The odds certainly look wrong. As you have said, putting such a large prize on offer changes behavior. And as Sloppy Pockets pointed out, the relevant probability is the chance of a player doing it in a match divided by the number of matches. What's more, using the 0.2^10 formula would only...

Can someone explain to me how anyone could have come up with odds of 7.8 million to one?

    "English" 8 Ball

As I recall Rex Williams (one time pro Snooker and english-Billiards player) saw this version of the game in Australia and brought it to the UK in the late 60's / early 70's for use in pubs.

    High-speed video of cue shots.

Was this a laminated tip? Perhaps up to the the inflection point, the upper layer(s) of leather compress (with max compression being reached over shorter intervals as the cue velocity increased); then after the inflection point, with sufficient velocity a relatively inflexible barrier formed by...

"Aim Small" on the Cue Ball

Yes, but the OB going off-line is not the only bad effect of clings / kicks. You also get an inelastic collision that takes all the pace off the CB. So a stun run through is often better than a slow roll in that respect.

"Aim Small" on the Cue Ball

Presumably the way to minimize cling / kick effects would be to use low outside (so that on impact the cb is both sliding and perfectly geared)? Or you could just twat it.

"Aim Small" on the Cue Ball

There is something reported on Martin Goodwill's website (an English-billiards player) regarding some work he did on this with Ben Plummer (an engineer) here => http://www.englishbilliards.org/kicks The conclusions they reached were that the worst type of kicks were caused by chalk (which...
