You can use a simple piece of paper for break cloth or jumping practice. I used paper all the time when my cloth was new but ended up with marks in all other locations so I gave up.

Its not just hitting the break hard but even more important is controlling the cue ball. I know where my cue ball will be when I break and it aint gonna be a scratch or stuck to the head rail. There are a lot of players out there who are not very good at controlling the cue ball on the break...

To think that you could have got all of that same break practice in way less than 1/2 the time, Im guessing even less than 1/4 of the time. Even though I have used mine a lot already I still bring it out and practice for 15-20 minutes once a month or so, it keeps me sharp.

I never tried locating the balance point of a cue, I don't hold the cue anywhere near the balance point so I doubt the balance point would make a difference for me.
