hightower deluxe or midsize cue lathe

I agree, waited 7 weeks for mine and would do it again in a heartbeat. You won't be disappointed. The mid is a great machine but you can do so much more with the deluxe. In the mean time, and if you haven't already, buy Chris's book and read it cover to cover, it will give you something to...

    Vintage cue ID help

That top one appears to be a Boetzel, check out this thread and see Lizardking's reply (second post). It looks just like the second one from the bottom in that pic. Does it say Made In Germany or Made In West Germany anywhere on it? The only thing that throws me off is the joint is a little...

    Tip popping off

And follow Dave's advice and make sure your cutting tool is razor sharp. Good catch Dave! This is #1 and I tend to assume that everyone keeps a good edge on thier tools so I forget to think about this possibility.

    Tip popping off

Also, try making a facing cut on something (plastic, wood, or aluminum if you have some) as large as your chuck will hold. This should make any misalignment of the headstock much easier to see. If you're seeing a concave face now you'll probably see more of a conical face in the larger material...

    Bumper for wheelchair player

Maybe one of the many "slip on" type bumpers might work? Not sure if they mar the buttsleeve or not, never tried one, but it might work for him. A quick google search came up with a few.

    CNC software ...

For something simple like you suggest you might give Cut 2D a try (also from Vectric, the makers of Aspire). Has pretty much the same simple interface as Aspire, and they have a no time limit trial. Costs ~150 but for simple engravings and 2-D cuts I think it would be well worth it. Here's a...

    What's your worst screw up?

That's a great story Chris. How people get started doing what they do has always been interesting for me, thanks for sharing!

Check out Bob's video here: Probably the easiest way to do them.... not the only way though. :)

    3040 cnc machine ... question ...

Can't help but I can hopefully point you in the right direction. It's going to depend on whether that VFD has inputs for spindle on/off/reverse. Some did and some didn't. Then it also depends on whether your controller has outputs, and in the case of speed, a variable voltage output to match the...

    Water Cooled Spindle

Same here Dave, doesn't seem to matter if it's a 20 minute job or an 8-10 hour continuous job (I also do some 3-D carvings on my machine) nor how hard I'm driving it. I have a tub with 1 1/2 Gal. of distilled water and a Gal. of coolant. Has worked fine for a couple years. JC is spot on that...

    carbon fiber cue mishap

Do a search on Amazon for teflon tape... 4 rolls for 5.99, 8 for 6.99, 1/2"X520". It's also called plumbers tape, thread tape, etc.... Can easily be found anywhere they sell any kind of plumbing supplies. Usually comes on a blue dispenser roll with a white pop off cover/sleeve. Hope that helps.

Some advice needed here ... carbon fiber shaft re-tipping.

Yes to all of this, but I do burnish my tips, my customers seem to expect it. I'd rather not because of the heat, so I'm real careful when I do. Since I read that when you responded in the previous post I mentioned, I have started using PTFE for tip replacements. Much cleaner and no surprises...

Some advice needed here ... carbon fiber shaft re-tipping.

Really sorry to hear that. This was mentioned in a recent thread here. One of the posters said the finish peeled off when he removed the tape he used to shield the ferrule/shaft from glue. IMHO McDermott has to know this is a problem and they really should be addressing it. The finish on a...

Nice job Dave! Wow, how much did that thing weigh? Now I understand why Sean wanted that thing out of there, must have been hella butt heavy!

    CNC spindle

Glad to help when I can. :) It should serve you well for what you planning. I don't think you hijacked the thread.... seems like it's all related to the same subject. VFD's and spindles have become a lot more confusing since the ones from China flooded the market. The specs rarely match the...

    CNC spindle

Hi Kyle, Not to butt in but... It should be fine. The 110v VFD's have a stepup to 220v internally. See this link https://buildyourcnc.com/FAQ/10082 with one caveat... it's not going to have the "same amount of torque and strength" like it says there. You can't get something for nothing, the...

Z Axis Indicator/DRO for Small Lathe

+1 on this! That 2" dovetail mounted indicator is handy for all kinds of things. From cutting rings, to drilling/boring holes to an exact depth, to creating accurate tenons and shoulders. Couldn't live without it! Thanks Chris!
