    International Straight Pool 14.1 Championship - November 23-26, 2024

A 48-player straight pool round robin….I assume there will be a shot clock (?).

Finding bank pool players Chicago south to practice with.

I know John plays ‘one hole‘, at least. Personally, I never had the patience (first thing Eddie Taylor asked me when I buttonholed him during a northern road exhibition in ‘61, was who locally gambled at banks or one pocket?….I had never even heard of either game, or anyone who played them back...

    Diamond pockets specs

Local GC covered with 760+ speed off-brand cloth played very well, initially. Now, after slightly worn, a ball hit with any speed that touches the long rail on the way into the corner will always bobble. Don’t know why, since that didn’t happen (as I recall) ‘back in the day’ (?). BTW: All...

Physicists and Billiard Balls - Do You Know Your History?

And that was under perfect conditions (when no one was shooting at you, and your friends weren’t going down in flames). Many B17 bombs landed miles off target.

How do you dress or appear at a pool hall?

Right. That’s just what I said to the matire d at the Pump Room, right before he threw me out!

Physicists and Billiard Balls - Do You Know Your History?

Right. I was surprised to learn that the earth’s rotation was one of the many calculations included when setting up the Norden bombsight for a mission.

How do you dress or appear at a pool hall?

While I also complain about sloppily dressed players (I doubt if many of my current rural neighbors have ever owned a suit or a tie), I can honestly confess to never buying a vest or suspenders, which might well be unusual for the (war time) generation that preceded mine.

OB falls into pocket while CB is in transit to hit it, Is this a foul?

There ought to be a special ‘earthquake‘ rule (if it happens in Calif., then it would be a foul). Those that waste time while a ball is hanging there, likely SHOULD be penalized 😁. Would positions be restored if a CB hits a piece of chalk, takes a funny roll and then scratches? Sometimes, sh!t...

Had an actual dream about playing pool last night. Was annoying :)

My other recurring nightmare is having my car stolen, and I can’t figure out how to work my cell phone to call police (Sigmund Freud would likely diagnose as parental ‘abandonment issues’) 😁

The smaller pockets are helping the weak players, its very deep and people don't see it.

Those V.B. Diamonds played nearly like G.C.s when the cloth was new, and cheating corner shots wouldn’t bobble unless hit too hard. Once the cloth is well broken in though, all bets are likely off. Go figure. G.C.s covered in 760 back in the 90s seemed to play consistently throughout.

The smaller pockets are helping the weak players, its very deep and people don't see it.

When the tournament table went from 10’ to 9’, the 14.1 game win score went from 125 to 150. Maybe today’s smaller pockets should reverse that (?). In the ‘HUSTLER‘ movie, the script implies way too many 125 point straight pool games are played in the allotted time. Though Willie WAS tech...

Had an actual dream about playing pool last night. Was annoying :)

Mine are usually nightmares about unsuccessfully searching for a decent local poolroom (and amiable competition). When I finally find one, either the tables are goofy shapes, or there are multiple distractions (stolen cue, noisy patrons, etc.). Just when I finally get a proper game going...

    Willie Mosconi Instructional Video

Though the video seemed quite basic, surprisingly, I DID learn something important as soon as he started on 14:1. Go figure. It hadn’t occurred to me to leave any dead combination as a safety valve (I tend to clear away clusters early, so naturally, then I’m screwed if I get in trouble down table).

    Gloves

The wall-mounted talc dispenser was once a standard fixture in virtually every quality poolroom. The perfect way to dispense the exact amount needed, in the perfect hand location. When those disappeared, and players brought their own bottles of talc, is when accidental overuse began the...

    Best Non Metal Rack.

The Diamond & Delta racks have the great recessed side grooves. Nothing more frustrating than spending the extra time getting a really tight rack, and then have the damned triangle slip out of your sweaty fingers while lifting it, thus disturbing the balls. I also like the oversized Diamond...

    Gloves

I‘ve never needed to carry more than two. By the time the second one is noticeably wet, the first is usually dry. Also, something I’ve noticed re: modern synthetic fiber/knit construction items: dirt/sweat isn’t absorbed, and doesn’t adhere. Regular washing will likely only accelerate...

Drop pocket vs. gully... what is your preference and why?

Or, you could just use V10 chalk, thus keeping the balls (and returns) clean, and save on shoe leather.

Drop pocket vs. gully... what is your preference and why?

The antique Schmidt tables I learned on, had deep, leather net pockets. Hardly ever had to empty one before the 9-ball ring game was over, and the pocketing sound was kind of a …‘kassshinnk’.

are fake Aramith Balls easy to detect?

I‘ve purchased apparently authentic red circle CBs online that came without packaging. Would large wholesale lots of those all be delivered individually wrapped?
