What is a pool league? (basic info)

I have only been playing a few months. I try to play everyday. Played a lot the 70s in high school. I am 59 years old now. My wife got me a dvd set by Jerry Briesath for Christmas, I really like his style of teaching. I wish he was closer to Ky so I could take some lessons.
