    2008 AZ Straight Pool Challenge!

I ran a 38 this week, that's a new high for me.

Where did you first play pool, who taught you?

AFAIK there isn't any action there anymore. I used to work there from 1998-99...and Eddie Cugan (chk sp) was the only one left still playing there...and maybe Dom Ferriera. I think a few players used to pass through now and then...but I never saw anyone matching up while I was there. Eddie...

    Cut break

Billiard Club Network has Buddy's breaking tips up on YouTube. He has a pretty good descripton of using the cut break for breaking from the box...which is the same as scottjen26's description. He also talks about it while commentating a match between Basavich and Deuel, linked below. I don't...

PIVOT POINTS & DEFLECTION amount on cues

I found the same...that the low deflection shafts pivot more towards the joint, and the one piece shafts pivot around 12 inches...house cues and straight tapered shafts pivot around 6-8 inches...approximately. I would agree here as well. I typically suggest that regardless of what Platinum has...

Instructors that won't tell you what speed they are

That was my thought: a drag shot. In addition to PJ's comments above, I'll use it in situations where position requires follow...but I also have to hold the cue ball. (Assuming I can't get to a rail for reverse english.) For example, a long cut shot into the side pocket...where I want the cue...

    2008 AZ Straight Pool Challenge!

Been meaning to post here for a while but I haven't found the time to play straight pool lately...although I'll be looking to remedy that. I ran 25 last week so you can put me down for 25 in February. Thanx.

    Back Hand English/Pivot Point

Whenever I use a low deflection shaft I play english by feel instead of BHE. I've seen some refer to it as front hand english...but I don't think that's right since I make my adjustment as I address the cue ball. (When I use BHE with standard shafts I make my adjustment after the address.)...

Prayers for Robb Saez and his dad.

Robb, I just saw you the other day...I'm terribly sorry to hear about this. From all of us at the Corner Pocket in CT, our prayers and condolences are with you and your family. Christian

    Viking G57 Cue

With production cues it's important to distinguish Viking, Joss and other American cue makers from those produced overseas. Even though the Vikings are production, they are made in the US and that does mean something. I typically purchase Vikings because I think they have a lot of consistency...

    Bustamante vs. Peach

I agree...I picked that up from his eyes in the video also. He probably had the best vantage point from everyone, and he was also more tuned in than anyone else was.

Fairfield County, CT or Westchester County, NY 14.1 players?

If you're ever in the New Haven area I would be up for a game. Right now I don't play 14.1 but I was planning on starting soon. I'm about a C speed.

    viking cues?

I've played exclusively with Viking cues since I started playing in amateur leagues in 2000. I purchased two from the VX series, and then another player and the jump/break from the F series. I'll be purchasing a couple more from the G series during the holidays. Each time I decide to make a...

    AIMING VIDEO - part 2

I apologize if this is out of context since Mike's video link is restricted from my internet at work. However Bob, I believe I've seen the same measurement system described on the BAT website. I typically teach players to use this reference if they're having trouble finding the center of the...

    Position Patterns

Advanced Pool by George Fels has been my favorite of late. It covers strategies and pattern play in straight pool, eight ball, and nine ball. It's less than 200 pages but it contains a ton of good information. A great book to pick up if you feel that your game has reached a plateau, and...

Increasing your level of competition and bringing guests

Hehe, I'm still trying to promote an in-house division from the Corner Pocket on Thursdays...but we're stuck on having just three teams that night. Our Wednesday in-house division has had at least 10 teams for over two years now. The talent level is going up too, as we have one or...
