    State Open Tournaments?

I used to play competitive table tennis and the USTTA has an interesting ladder format. They have an open tournament with different rungs and each rung has a final with a winner and a runner. At the highest level there's the open. People can only sing up at a rung at their level and above. So...

    Best Instructors

Couldn't agree more. Acquiring a stroke that is true, accurate, and consistent is a surprisingly difficult thing to do. I call it a "TAC" stroke myself and every once in a while I do the mighty X drill. The level of technical purity that this drill demands is amazing.

    Best Instructors

I started shooting on a regular basis about 20 months back after joining the APA. I started as a 3 and was there for about six months and then went to a 4 after another six months. Been a 5 for about 8 months now and I feel I'm a strong 5. Hoping to get to a six this year. This is for both 8 and...

    Value for money price point?

For most products, be it cars, or TVs, or speaker systems or what have you, there are two interesting price points. 1. Value for money. This is subjective, of course, but a car it's probably a Toyota Corolla in the US. Costs a decent amount of money but will last 20 yrs with decent maintenance...

When Working on Your Fundamentals - Maximum Number of Key Thoughts You Can Work On at One Time

The way I try to do it is to go sequentially. A lot of the guidelines that are in place for an effective stroke can be sequenced in order. This makes a practice session very slow so I've slowed down to give it time to hit a stroke. Even then I can't always remember all weaknesses that need to...

What do you think the best shotmakers have in common?

Pete Sampras once said "You gotta have the game, the mind, and the heart." I think he put it pretty succinctly, and in the right order. The physical skills. How to grip the stick, how to form one's stance, how high to stand, how to aim and stroke etc. Almost all of these are intuitive but will...

    Break Cue queries

Yes, it was about the speed imparted to the cue ball. The results, as he said, were "suggestive but not conclusive." No, he didn't say that any kind of swing/stroke can produce any result (not that I know of, at least); and I'm not sure where that came from or why you ask that.

    Break Cue queries

In one of his books, Byrne addresses this very question and his conclusion is that the weight of the break stick doesn't matter much, if at all. So one can break as well with a 25 oz cue as an 18 oz cue and it might come down to personal preference. Personally I've had occasions where I've...

    Detachable Bridge

I suppose "versatile" might have been a better choice of word than "flexible".

    Detachable Bridge

Related to this topic, Seybert's has a few different bridges I'm seeing for the first time. https://seyberts.com/collections/bridges Can someone recommend 2-3 bridges that are the most flexible and are the slip-on type? I'll be happy to have a couple of them with me in the bag. Thanks Sashi

    Lighting advise

Thanks for the replies. Littman lights seem as expensive as Arena for a full sized table. LED panels seem to be the way to go for a more economical option and seem to do the job pretty well. Maybe I'll start with the LEDs and perhaps upgrade to something like the perimeters a couple of years...

    Lighting advise

Hello, I have a 9ft table in my basement with a $160 light that I bought off Amazon about 4 yrs back. It's kind of OK but the light is centered on the table along the long side. This leaves dark shadows near the cushions and sometimes I find it difficult to find the aim point on the 6-ball and...

    Solitary scoring

Thanks for the replies. Apart from the billiards scoring app, there are a few generic scoring apps that will simply keep track of scores so that seems to be good as well. I'm not sure if I'm inclined towards the beads at the moment. For bowlliards, I use a bowling scorekeeper since the math...

    Solitary scoring

I play by myself a good bit and try to go thru different flavors of games like continuous, straight, one-pocket, bowlliards apart from the standard 8 and 9 ball routines. My table doesn't have the scorers, unfortunately. So here are my questions: 1. How easy (and risk free) is it to actually get...
