Can anyone tell me what wood this is?

Goncalo Alves maybe??? Alves grain patterns vary a lot and could look like that. The weight of the cue could clue you in as well. If the wood feels heavy, I would lean towards Alves. If the cue feels lighter, then Mr. Neighbors may be correct.

CMs, any funny non-build stories ??

I had a player ask me to build a cue with a shaft on both ends. He played APA and was trying to beat the jump cue rule. So, he wanted to be able to play with one end of the cue, then flip it around and hit jump shots with the other end. I politely declined and told him he was over thinking...

Using the microwave as a kiln?

I agree. It is not worth it for an instrument that must remain stable and straight. It is just an interesting theory. Kiln dried wood is supposed to be very stable. If this effectively does the same thing? It might have application value in certain instances. I am going to try it on a...

Using the microwave as a kiln?

you would want to get rid of the wax before you try this. Turn down the product once before you start.

Using the microwave as a kiln?

I was at woodcraft the other day and bought a couple of bowl blanks to turn. One blank was kiln dried wood. The other blank was wax sealed and still wet. The cashier asked me if I had ever tried to use my microwave as a kiln to dry out wet wood. He said he gets good results. So, i did a...

Radial joint protector pins from Atlas

Is anyone else having issues with the male radial JP pins that Atlas is selling? This is the first time I ordered them from Atlas and they will not screw in properly. I do not think it is me. I think it is something funky with the start of the thread. Have you run into any issues? How did...

    Butterfly cue

I recently saw some Darrin Hill butterfly cues that were awesome. Not cheap though. Brent is also at the top of the list. As you can tell, he well respected around here.

player to repairman to cuemaker(any and all)

Well, I loved the game from a very young age. When I was a kid I would go over to my neighbors house. They had a pool table. I would play for hours by myself. But, I did not take the game seriously until the late 90s. I had a friend that was an excellent player and I just marveled at his...

    Question for Deluxe users???

Has anyone put a 4 jaw independent chuck on a deluxe? If so, how did you do it? I assume you would have to use an adaptor plate, but I have been looking around on the net and cannot seem to find anything. Maybe I am barking up the wrong tree.

    Mahogony wood?

Paul is correct. You are going to have to add some weight or the cue will come out too light. PH in the handle will help some, but you may end up with your balance point further back than you want. Using PH, then I would reverse my plan. PH forearm with a cored Mahoghony handle. It will...

    Turning down shafts

that is the same thing I do, two sometimes three passes in two or three sessions until I am at 16-18mm. It totally depends on my time and energy (and my wife's patience) as to exactly where it ends up. then I start cutting in small passes as I start a cue. I try to work the cue butt and the...

    Turning down shafts

I was wondering, I know different guys have different ideas of what the proper turning schedule should be. If you do not mind sharing, what is your turning schedule? How much time between turns, How many turns before the shaft is down to finish size? what is your reasoning? My guess is there...

    First Butterfly Splice

that forearm is long. It is about 14.5 inches. At 12 inches where it will be cut down to, the forearm is right at 1.000 in diameter. The long points are currently over 10 inches. I am hoping they end up in the 8 to 9 inch range. Time will tell!

    First Butterfly Splice

Ok, here is the back story. I have been approached by a young lady to have me build her a cue. She currently plays with a very expensive cue ($2k+). She is tired of worrying about it getting damaged/Stolen and always smelling like cigarette smoke. I cannot blame her. She wants something...
