I have a buddy that gave me a piece of square mahogony that came from a mantle. Its about 4 feet long, and about 1 1/2 inches square. He wants me to use it to make him a cue out of it, but i dont recall seeing any cues here made from this wood. Is it suitable for a cue? Im thinking of making a merry widow with a purple heart handle. Any suggestions?

It will look pretty plain. It will be okay as a cue but you will have to add some weight somewhere. Big joint screw, heavy handle, whatever.

with PH ewwwwww lol J/K

i think a nice curly handle would give it some nice contrast.

How bout some snakewood? ;) lol. No chance! Lol. My buddy doesnt even play pool, so he wont care, he will like the purple look.

Paul is correct. You are going to have to add some weight or the cue will come out too light. PH in the handle will help some, but you may end up with your balance point further back than you want.

Using PH, then I would reverse my plan. PH forearm with a cored Mahoghony handle. It will move more weight forward and your buddy will like the hit of the cue better in my opinion. Use some Mahoghony phenolic for the joint and buttcap, figure out some ringwork to make it pop, and it will probably come out quite nicely.

Just a suggestion!

Thanks for all the suggestions! I like the purple heart forearm idea, maybe ill go that route.

I sometimes use plain maghogany as under the wrap material....I have a source that is cheaper than any other wood.....it is very plain......

Kevin V uses PH and stains it black with some of his cues. Looks very nice as ebony. An ebonized handle might work or you could ebonize the entire piece of Mahogany. A cheap way to get the desired weight and looks great too.

I like that idea Terry. The contrast would look pretty nice i think.

I have a couple of pieces that I'm planning to use in a cue. They have some pretty swirly grain and nice coloring. With the prismatic effect that mahogany has, it should be pretty neat with any curly wood.
