    Dr. Dave ....

I’ve found that in OP when you need high side spin revolution and low speed for tricky take out of pocket shots, maple performs much better than CF. And in humid conditions even more so. This also holds true for bank shots where to need to hold your cue ball location but throw the object ball to...

Here's something you don't see every day, what's the ruling on it?

Like I said, Old Timers felt that when you raised up and began to move away you've relinquished you inning. I think that's a better way to measure balls in "Potential Motion."

Here's something you don't see every day, what's the ruling on it?

There's several possible discussion points here. Bob Jewett is correct about "Jawed Balls." When the balls are touching the facings they are still on the table and not pocketed. They're still atop the slate and not pocketed. In this posting and picture, the balls are jammed in the pocket and not...

The Color of Money Masse Shot recreated

I think the cross corner bank combination seen in the Hustler may be the most difficult to recreate. I've attempted it and at best i succeeded once out of thirty attempts.

    Rasson Table owners? any regrets?

You never know much about the worth of any table until you've moved them and set them up several times. I have four Diamond Red Labels all 20 plus years old and moved them several times and they play great. Additionally, I have 2 GC 2's that are at least 65 years old and they play great. As a...

SJM at the 2026 Derby City Classic

Using a true double elimination format you can move forward to a point. In the buy back format esp banks lots of first round losers just don't buy back which does help move the event along. In the OP Event, more players stay in I would say and this is where you have to be on "your game" as a TD...

SJM at the 2026 Derby City Classic

Bob and Stu, this lack of full utilization of tables has led to complaints of “slow play.” In the streamed match between Garcia and I think Megliano (spelling not correct I think) you could see at least 4 tables open for over an hour. I think this occurs in part due to the time allotted for...

Hayden Ernst 14 Years of age...Straight shooter

Prodigies also rise to the level of their incompetence like the rest of us. There have been many thousands of youngsters who had great talents only to settle for the minor leagues, house golf pro's, good college players even great who couldn't get to the professional ranks. There's a reason why...

SJM at the 2026 Derby City Classic

Stu, your narrative about the DCC is most relevant. Do you have an opinion as to the future status of the DCC? Also if you remember early saturday morning I introduced myself to you and we had a nice conversation about the event.

    Fedor/Demarco

I watched it through to the end and I thought Fedor reached into Louis"s side to spot that scratch he had. Fedor plays great OP but is lacksidasical about ball counting. Several times he made balls and didn't put them in his side.

    What killed the slip stroke?

Maha, you know your Mosconi lore. He, except for some of the current Trick Shot artists was very entertaining. Those exhibitions hundred ball runs were flawless.

Myth or real - Stroke smoothness as a requisite for certain shots

I don't know anymore about "Proper Technique." Seriously, take a look at some 'Busty" videos. He pulls the cue stick all the way back through his bridge and almost loses the stick and can followthrough with precise accuracy. So, it's about what works for you IMO.

    What killed the slip stroke?

In the early to middle 60's when the Family Billiard program, which Brunswick sponsored, Mosconi was the main Exhibition person. He ran a hundred balls every time I watched him. That was at least 10 times. He wanted brand new felt and unused Centennial Balls for his play. He did not use the SLIP...

    What killed the slip stroke?

A few notable players from the past who used the Slip Stroke were: Cole, NY Blackie, Ritchie Florence, Joe Balsis, Al Gold-Gilbert (3C player) to name a few.

Predicting and Controlling Cue Ball Direction off a Rail with Follow Shots

Dr. Dave, when looking at carom shots, do you use the "peace sign" to determine deflection? In particular, I'm talking about carom shots where two balls are close together on the rail and you're not sure whether to hit the first ball thicker or thinner?

Funny Things Said to You at the Pool Room

    Great Pool Room Stories

I was on the road to San Fran with my buddy when he blew the bankroll totaling $70 circa 1968. We hand $11.50 to get back to LA. Plenty of money with gas 23 cents/gal and Mc Donalds 15 cents a hamburger and most importantly cigs 22 cents/pack. We stopped at the old Circus Room in San Jose and I...

    Great Pool Room Stories

I was about 19 yrs old and at Norwalk Family Billiards in So Cal. A friend Bob Brown and I were broke when two players asked Brown to hold their stakes 7 ahead 9 ball $50 a piece. Brown put me in action for$100 against a much weaker player. I was afraid to play because of the potential bad...

    What is a Shortstop?

My friend Hawaiian Brian and I spent many a day in the late 60's early 70's traveling around hustling pool. Brian always felt that going into a strange room always try to play their best player. Why, because he's most likely going to be a "shortstop" who beats on everybody locally but is...
