Carom cue to break in pocket billiards

Just wondering if anyone has used a Carom cue to break in pocket billiards. I currently use a 2x4 butterfly case (I currently store a playing cue and a carom cue for 3C). I could use my playing cue to break or grab a house cue but was just wondering if anyone has tried using a carom cue with...

A shot from the movie "The Hustler"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16VriO8ZQkg&feature=related I was looking at the ball that Fats shoots into the corner. I can't really tell if that ball lined up with the pocket. I can't really tell but does he spin the adjacent ball inable to make the dead ball go into the pocket? If you can...

Short vs. Long strokes for 14.1...your thoughtss

I'm at that point in my straight pool game where i'm experimenting to see what works for me. I'm primarily a 9 ball player and have that long fluid stroke (which may work for 9 ball). When learning 14.1 i've tried using the same stroke with mixed results. Last night during league, I experimented...

    Re: player cue tips

Re: player cue tips Why is it that some players prefer their tip to be the bare minimum while others have a "birthday cake" on their cue as John schmidt used to say. For example some of the filipinos, and svb use the bare minimum on their tip. I used to think the more of the tip the better the...

what is the ideal pace in 14.1?

for you massive rack runners in straight pool...what is your ideal pace in shooting?...if a shooter takes his or her time analyzing each rack..and shoots at a slow pace, will they ultimately crunch big numbers/maybe not?...or can they start slow but ultimately have to pick it up if they were to...

another thought on the opening break

Maybe it's just me, but I've been pondering this for the longest and was wondering how many of you fellow 14.1 shooters have thought about the dead carom shot, if it's available, and how often it appears after the opening break in a match. If the breaker edges off the corner ball (either left or...

    aiming on the break (8,9,10ball)

In breaking..i've watched a lot of players aim their cue at the vertical axis of the cueball-basically where the cueball touches the felt of the table. So esentially it looks as if they're cueing with low. Would it be safe to say to also look at the head ball of the rack the same way-meaning...

A nice little shot applicable to 14.1..your thoughts

another experience i'd like to share

it's a great feeling to find a dead ball in the stack and make your opponents heart sink while in the chair...it's not such a great feeling when you miss your next shot and he runs 50 and out on you :(

something I observed in my game

While shooting in my 14.1 league tonight..I was playing a guy who had to spot me 50 balls, a very strong shooter to say the least. I tried to not worry so much about missing but rather focus on the reason I missed. I let my head analyze what went wrong and why it went wrong as opposed to just...

question about 3 foul rule again

I'm playing a league 14.1 match....i miss causing a foul. Now I am on two, since I had one previously. My opponent goes up pockets a ball, turns to me and asks me if I'm on 2 fouls, cuz he's not sure. Not wanting to be a jerk, I politely tell him yes. My question is, if I'm playing my match...

    interesting opening break

check this video out of mario he vs. huidji see look at the opening break shot...he calls the headball ( I believe the one ball) in the side instead of breaking safe...interesting shot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmZh_0HrdWI

    14.1 Frustration

Just had my league match tonight. The league director just recently bumped me up 2 levels so instead of playing to 60 points I now have to play to 100. Anyway, I was playing an individual who only had to play to 75. If I was at my handicap previously I would've won long before. Due to my new...

    break shot off the stack

I've seen blackjack do this in his you tube videos. Any real formula to help calculate this shot? Is this the same idea as in a carom shot explained in the 99 critical shots book? This could be a real life saver when not getting shape on a break ball to continue your run. Just curious...

14.1 on diamond vs brunswick table

I dont know if it's just me...when I practice on a brunswick in my home pool room...I feel fine..able to run balls..but when I'm playing in my league in the city where everytable is a diamond table..I struggle and struggle..maybe its still mental...maybe not?..but does playing on a diamond table...

    14.1--cueing on the opening break

now I know traditionally the opening break is done using about 1 to 1:30 (top right outside english)on the cueball hitting about 1/4 of the corner ball comming two rails around and stopping at the opposite end of the table hopefully leaving your opponent with no shot and cueball snug up against...

    frustrating mental aspect

So I was practicing some 14.1 in my home room and was on a run of about 23 balls when I receive an annoying call from work..nonetheless it ruined my afternoon and running balls was like pulling teeth:angry: I couldnt put more than a 3 ball run..anyway..it shows how much concentration is needed...

    dead balls in the stack

perhaps this was discussed in previous threads...if so, forgive me for asking...but just out of curiosity...how do you go about looking for dead balls in the stack...do you see what may potentially line up for one of the corner pockets?...or do you have some other more elaborate means of...

Anyone else think Bustamante got jipped for his Win at this year's World 9 Ball?

Just Curious, If I'm not mistaken, I read that first place at this recent world 9 ball event was only $36,000 compared to the last two world 9 ball events with $100,000 going to the eventual winner, not to mention the nice big trophy they get to hoist over their head. Bustamante just received a...
