Converting antique Brunswick from Snooker to Pool

Yeah, they didn't call them jumbo framework for nothing...those things are monsters. By the 30's when they built the Randolph, the depression was setting in, billiard table sales were slumping, and they scaled the tables back. Never again would the world see such behemoth construction like the...

Converting antique Brunswick from Snooker to Pool

Well...I did tell Dartman I'd draw something up to show the base...and I went a little overboard. I don't really know why, maybe it will be of use to me later. If anyone ever wanted to know how a 30's Brunswick is assembled, here ya go. The yellow top frame is attached to the respective piece...

Converting antique Brunswick from Snooker to Pool

That would pobably look pretty cool, but I think it would destroy the vintage look...it would be too modern. I wanted to keep the hardwood veneer to help retain the vintage character, even though it's not going to be original anymore. I like the light strip though...would go well with those...

Well, the quilting is a bit too heavy on the renderings, but this should be enough to represent what I mean about the full custom idea. It'd be a bit more work, but I think it looks pretty good. It would definitely be difficult to pick a color though. Let me know your thoughts:

The pockets will be replaced (next to last, due to their cost) and I agree, they look really incomplete. They probably came with proper leather baskets and fringe originally, not that cheap cloth net. I do have probably a foot worth of inlay in need of repair. I considered doing it back all...

Converting antique Brunswick from Snooker to Pool

For the legs, I have plenty of material...the rest of the table lol The problem is, I am concerned with it looking frankenstein'd if I try to patchwork repair the legs...which I understand is rather difficult to make look right, even for people who know what they're doing, and I really can't...

Converting antique Brunswick from Snooker to Pool

I have been considering what to do about the legs...most of the damages are at the bottom. If I am to stick to the original plan they have to be addressed. I can't afford to have them professionally re-done, and any repair I could do to preserve the original finish would not be up to snuff. I...

Converting antique Brunswick from Snooker to Pool

That's an awesome table, I don't know if I'm more in awe of the table, or the workshop. Now that I saw your pictures, it all makes sense now. The large holes with the plugs I figure were to cap the screws for the backer, and that they had just been removed. Now it dawns on me that those were for...

Converting antique Brunswick from Snooker to Pool

I am in zero rush to to put it all together. I am only going to put it together as completed, so the body and finish work first, then slate work, then the rails. Hence why I am looking for opinions on the veneer and finish, since it's first to attack. I also reason that since the veneer is...

Converting antique Brunswick from Snooker to Pool

So...now what to do with it... Some people might call my ideas an atrocity. Some already consider it one that I am converting it to begin with. However, that coupled with it's current state means originality is going to have to be thrown out the window anyway. I don't plan on selling it, and I...

Converting antique Brunswick from Snooker to Pool

The blind rails are pretty rouh, but easy enough to replace, I guess: ...but I knew most of this, no biggie. It's what I couldn't see before a 2 hr drive that's annoying. Notice that blind rail by itself? All are like that. They appear to originally have been glued to the rest of the...

Converting antique Brunswick from Snooker to Pool

What I wouldn't have given for a slate dolly last night...would've been worth a slab's weight in gold. I swear, those 1.5" slabs must've weighed over 400 lbs a pop. At least 350. I hurt. A lot. This table will definitely be a 'project'...more than I was hoping. I will create a restoration...

Converting antique Brunswick from Snooker to Pool

Well, today is the today! ...I pick up the table in a couple of hours. I have blankets and straps, and a big box truck, but not much else. Common sense tells me that 1.5" thick pieces of slate that probably weigh 400+ lbs each would be fine laying flat and blanket wrapped, but common sense...

EDIT: Nevermind, thought that was a Kling. That's why I shouldn't check my e-mail when still half-asleep, and actually look at the post instead of the e-mail notification. Other than the snooker nets and finish, no, what's the difference?

Converting antique Brunswick from Snooker to Pool

Thanks for the insight RKC...I find that it would only run ~ $100 to buy new subrails...what would be the issue with just replacing the rail liners with proper ones? The only thing I could think of would be that this table is supposedly a t-rail...which would mean the entire rail assemblies...

Converting antique Brunswick from Snooker to Pool

I don't if I could find one, and even if I did, it would be hard to find a definitive angled shot to prove it was a 10'....they were/are rare, only made upon request as most 10 footers were 6 legs. You'll just have to trust Brunswick when they say they built it ;)

Converting antique Brunswick from Snooker to Pool

Oh, but they did make 10 footers, in 4 AND 6 leg versions: http://www.brunswickbilliards.com/our_rich_history/antique_tables/k_tables.html I am opposite of you, I like the 6 leg more than 4. But yes, the Kling, Arcade, Alexandria, Conquerer, and Hudson are probably my favorites in that order...

Converting antique Brunswick from Snooker to Pool

Truely, it was meant to be played on a 10' table, it just isn't anymore. Of this vintage (and older), I have seen more 10' pool tables than snooker tables. It fell out of favor MANY years ago, probably because in billiard halls: smaller tables=more tables=more money... But I happen to prefer...

Well, I have convinced myself I can do this, even if it takes a while to get it done. I have committed, and will be picking up the table on Monday. The journey begins...

Dart: It doesn't seem like Marvin is with the company anymore? The extension wasn't valid, so I tried dial by name and "Eisenhauer' wasn't recognized...uness it is misspelled from Matteroner's post above? Btw, Matt, Mitch...those are some beautiful Brunswicks...I am jealous.
