2-minute survey for pool players — a startup wants your honest opinion

I’ve often thought that some technology that allows you to replace balls exactly in the position they were would be useful. Like if you miss a shot or position you could replace the balls exactly where they were and try it again after the match. I mean you can try that from memory, but being off...

2-minute survey for pool players — a startup wants your honest opinion

Interesting. Although why they hadn’t heard of scoring beads or coins on the table I don’t understand.

    Who’s doing the best/ fastest leather re-wraps???

Ryan Theewen of RAT cues does great stack leather wraps. He also did my cork wrap many years ago and it’s still going strong. I haven’t seen his other leather wraps but I’m sure they are great.

Chalk Habits and A Doozy of an AccuStats

Very strange. Every hall I play in has blue cloth, and many people (including me) use Pagulayan or V10 and I never see “all these little green marks all over”. But let someone play with Predator 1080 or the old Kamui and there are visible blue marks everywhere!

    Weekly GTA evening tournaments

Entry fee is actually staggered. See the poster below. It’s a good tournament.

surely this has happened in a big match, what's the rule??

The WPA rules only speak of unscrewing (a) your playing cue (b) while it’s your opponent’s turn and (c) when he’s on the hill. This example satisfies none of those three requirements. The BCAPL/CSI rules are similar. They also specifically give the example of you breaking by dry and hill...

surely this has happened in a big match, what's the rule??

Well under the wording of the rules it’s only a concession if it’s his inning. Presumably I’d be switching at my inning. The announcement that I’m changing shafts would just be to avoid an argument that it was some other form of concession.

surely this has happened in a big match, what's the rule??

Contrary to Skor’s post, there is indeed a rule this this effect right there in the WPA rules. 1.12 CONCESSION If a player concedes, he loses the match. For example, if a player unscrews his jointed playing cue-stick while the opponent is at the table and during the opponent’s decisive rack of...

Damn, I thought I was lazy! But even I can spare the energy to spin the chalk 180 degrees.

    Audience Sharking (Unintentional, but INSANE?)

Maybe that will attract viewers. I, personally, will hate it. I don’t even like Mosconi Cup when the fans don’t settle down when the players are actually down on the shot. Now fans cheering for the players after good shots and so on is great. Just be quiet when they are shooting.

Don’t need a discovery team. It’s right in the rules.

surely this has happened in a big match, what's the rule??

I think it’s tradition/history. Snooker cues were historically made of ash and were one piece cues. At some point they developed two piece cues but they were largely 3/4 joint (see picture as an example). I think top snooker players feel that you get a better hit with either no joint or a...

Do you know WHY he and other good players do this? Some might be placing it randomly and I only notice when it’s inverted, but I swear some are doing it on purpose. My only theory is they are trying to get rid of loose chalk in the cube. Like if they grew up playing with crumbling chalk or...

surely this has happened in a big match, what's the rule??

Good point. Given that the top pros get all their shafts and tips for free, it would make sense for them to keep a “tournament ready” back up shaft - with the tip played in just how they like it. SVB did a “what’s in the case” segment on Karl’s YouTube channel and I could not believe how many...

    Audience Sharking (Unintentional, but INSANE?)

I may have told this story before, but I remember watching a live stream of a major event held in a casino or convention center. Might have the International Open. Alex Pagulayan was playing another Filipino pro on the stream and the fire alarm goes off. All the tables stop and wait for the...

Chalk Habits and A Doozy of an AccuStats

I wish I knew why some players seem to deliberately place the chalk upside down. If I had my way, chalk upside down on the rails would result in a warning on a first offence, and BIH foul for every subsequent offence.

Chalk - Is This A Foul?

I would argue the foul is still on the shooter as the rules don’t specify who’s chalk: “2.6 DRIVEN OFF THE TABLE A ball is considered driven off the table if it comes to rest other than on the playing surface but is not pocketed. A ball is also considered driven off the table if it would have...

Chalk - Is This A Foul?

If the ball hit the chalk, it’s a foul. If the chalk bounced off the rail due to the cushion compression, no foul. 3.6 TOUCHED BALL It is a foul to touch, move or change the path of any object-ball except by the normal ball-to- ball contacts during shots. It is a foul to touch, move or change...

How would you rule if you were the referee? Assume a shot clock is in effect.

surely this has happened in a big match, what's the rule??

Interestingly, at snooker if the tip comes off, the player can take a break to have a new tip put on. I believe that if the tip is merely damaged, the player must play on. Of course in snooker a player almost never has a second cue (most professionals use a one piece cue). At pool, players are...
