Just joined APA, 9-ball was last night and Wednesday will be 8-ball next week. There is a point rating that helps your team get team point if you all do poorly so you don't end the season with 0 from what I understand...

For what they're trying to do with a league, I think it's a pretty good idea. Our area starts that scoring in, umm.. summer, I think. There may be a division or two that are starting it out, but I can't remember for sure. It gives a much better reason for playing your entire match harder.

I have been told in our area they are testing it out on one night. I believe the reason being is it will help cut down on sandbagging a bit more, and reward effort to not give up i.e. not getting skunked.

It starts Summer session....It's been tested all over I believe...

I think it's going to put a hurt on the lower ranked players. Instead of playing a 2 against a 2. You put your higher ranked player up and get bonus points.

I think it's a fascinating change for a novice league like the APA. The best example I can think of is a must-win match (like playoffs or Vegas) and team A is ahead by 2 points. Team A can put up their s/l 2 against Team B's s/l 7 and if that s/l 2 wins a single game, Team A wins. Under the old structure, if the final match decided who would advance, a 7 playing a 2 would be a massacre. During the course of the season, each and every game matters under this structure and to confuse things more, the potential for a dramatic swing in the standings exist each and every week. If your interest in the APA is strictly about shooting a little pool over a few beers, this is a great idea. If it's your only outlet for pool competition, you're probably going to be pissed.

The basic idea behind the new point system is to make every game count. In the past it has been easy for better players to allow weaker players to win games and not the match there by keeping their own rank in check.

It is intended to keep players from sandbagging.

I believe the APA is losing members in some areas due to the sandbagers and "junk counts" in 8- ball. Other leagues are drawing in members. This may be their way of dealing with that. How 8-ball can be played without calling your pocket is beyond me......

Yep, heard all about it!!! We were one of the test Divisions. Loved it and we've re-implimented it, no reason to wait till 2014. Makes every match count and the whole atmosphere more competetive.

The tampa division started it this session. From what we were told, the operators had the option of starting it sooner, but they all have been told it must be in place by Jan 2014.

Because the Equalizer System doesn't work as touted

If the ES worked, there would be one national champion, not five. Yes, five. Now 6s will have their own champ and everyone nationwide will be paying for it through a 20% increase in annual dues and a 33% increase in every singles board played anywhere. Can't wait to spend all this money to compete in Vegas on crapy Valleys.

Don't forget to tell us all about the sandbagger that knocks you out of the tournament!

How does the handicap work using that format?

Each set consists of 3 games. You play and could win all three or lose all three. So your skill level goes up or down. Why does it matter? The next time you still play 3 games and you have to win to get points. So if you win too much then what? You will still play 3 games the next time.

What am I missing that others know about?

The handicap races stay the same as before. So if a SL4 plays a SL3 it is a 3/2 race, or SL 6 plays a SL 5 it's a 5/4 race. The change is instead of only 1 point available now there are 3 points possible.

The only thing I am concerned about is slowing the night down. Knowing if I lose a game I give up a point I will play more defensively. Will be interesting to see how many teams adjust their style of play.

The (3) is points earned... It's not games played. Instead of only winning (1) point for winning a match, you can actually win (3) with a shutout of opponent...

While the merits of making play more competitive is a good change, it sounds like this will probably make match nights longer. The lower ranked players are now really going to cringe over crucial shots. High ranked players waiting for the anchor match to start around 10-11 pm will now have an excrutiating wait until midnight to start a match (our big table league had trouble finishing any team match within 4 hours).

The APA should adjust the handicap system in some manner before implementing the new scoring system nationwide.
