the experts tell me 7 to 10 1000ths (in diameter terms)

i can tell you this much,
from my own silly experiences,
you can sand thru 10/1000ths of finish in a heartbeat if you get heavy handed with the sandpaper
i did it to two cues in one day
THAT WAS A VERYYYYYYYYYY BAD DAY

I use an epoxy finish which is a little thicker than spraying clearcoat. By the time I get done with 2-3 coats it is about .020"-.025". It is a great alternative if you work in an area you cannot spray in.

I should also mention I wet sand it down after curing to about .010".

I like to stay in the 2.5/3 thou. range if I can. It's my opinion that too thick of a finish can stifle the cue's harmonics.

I don't like to go more than .005 more than the finished cut size, total diameter.
.006 is absolute max in 99% of the cues.
