⚠️How Many Here Collect Books on Pool?

Hi all!

I’d like to get a gauge on the pool/billiard book collectors here.

Why?

Because during the filming of my documentary on pool/billiards, “Raising The Hustler”, I had an experience at the American Film Market in California, which led to me to ask my friend, Disney/Marvel comic artist Scott Beaderstadt, about comics and pool.

I traveled around the country with Scott, attending Comic-Conventions and meeting other prominent comic artists.
When I would meet them, I would commission art from them of their most famous characters doing “something pool”.

I have almost 70 pieces, and am considering publishing a book to showcase the adventure and the artists and their art.

Would you be apt to buy this pool/comic art crossover from celebrated comic artists?

How would that work? You can't reprint their art and sell it.

In the process of getting their permission to include their art and their bio’s.
I have a Neal Adams, and he just passed away, so I need to ask his widow.
I also have Neal’s son, Joel, who did art for the prime-time cartoon, “King of the Hill”

The problem I see is once you do it, the pictures will get out on the web. You will have lost all control. They may even be reproduced and sold.

What format (size) are you thinking about? Like a coffee table book? Paperback graphic novel?
 
Bob Byrne once mentioned that the market for any billiard book was about 400. Of course that was 20 or 30 years ago. I imagine the minimum for a well done book is at least 200 now. That's if you only get the hard core billiard people. If there is cross-over, you'll get more.

It was also the only way. You could get good instruction and the history of the game. Ralph Eckert modern pool and John Grissim book Billiards: Hustlers & Heroes, Legends & Lies. Are two I liked.
 
If ever your project gets real, don't forget to provide several low-res sample pictures. Online book stores usually give you a sneak peek into the contents to know the product better before you buy. With comics and toons this is even more important IMO. Good luck with your attempt!
 
Not sure of your format, but seems these will be single frames.

I have a great interest in books in general, and pool fascinates me, but I regret to say that the work you describe would probably not interest me. So, I would probably not buy it. By way of explanation, I did not read comic books, but I loved the comic strips. Having thought through this, though, I might buy your book based upon the characters contained. Are we talking classic strip characters or comic book super heroes? I really need more info. The more thought I give it, the more intrigue develops -- but I really need specific information as to content.

As I recall, Andy Capp was sometimes depicted with a pool cue but more often with a beer. Classic Andy Capp on beer: "Problem it is you can't buy beer -- you can only rent it."
