I play pretty well but i am definitely not a full timer. I am a 9 in 9 ball
If you're a 9 in APA, you should be at minimum a 7, or an 8.

This is one of the reasons I generally don't play in handicapped tournaments. I mean the concept is great, level the playing field so everyone has a chance. But to be honest, I don't get much enjoyment from spotting someone...or from being spotted. I get the most enjoyment and I learn the most when I go head to head with a better player, without any handicap. I don't mind playing in an open and going out 0-2, and sometimes I go out 3-2 (recent Houston Open), and I hope to do better next time (that's right, Cliff Joyner escaped the wrath of Poolmouse this time!).
In any case, definitely not a knock on handicapped tournaments. I've been to a lot of tournaments, mostly to watch, and this was not only one of the most well run, it was also one of the most enjoyable. I really wish this tournament could have been fully captured and made into a model for all tournament directors.

I am in Austin under Betty and Grady Dunagen but take everything they say with a grain of salt. They seem to always be there when I win.
