Handicapping

I am in Austin under Betty and Grady Dunagen but take everything they say with a grain of salt. They seem to always be there when I win.

This is one of the reasons I generally don't play in handicapped tournaments. I mean the concept is great, level the playing field so everyone has a chance. But to be honest, I don't get much enjoyment from spotting someone...or from being spotted. I get the most enjoyment and I learn the most when I go head to head with a better player, without any handicap. I don't mind playing in an open and going out 0-2, and sometimes I go out 3-2 (recent Houston Open), and I hope to do better next time (that's right, Cliff Joyner escaped the wrath of Poolmouse this time!). :)

In any case, definitely not a knock on handicapped tournaments. I've been to a lot of tournaments, mostly to watch, and this was not only one of the most well run, it was also one of the most enjoyable. I really wish this tournament could have been fully captured and made into a model for all tournament directors. :)

Thank you for the compliments! We have so many things in store for next year, I'm super excited!!

The handicap works well for many, and I think we can all improve/learn no matter if we give weight or get weight. We wanted the tour be handicapped so we could allow the top players, and also give the lower players a better chance. It seems to be working right now for The Omega Billiards Tour.

We figure out people's handicap by how they play others. If you know how you play some of the other well-known Austin players, or players who played in our last event, we can rate ya pretty easily. :)
