One hole. How might one learn the game when no one around him plays? What/where is a good place to get started? Books? Anything insightful would be greatly appreciated.

i got a couple of accu stats of top players playing it. grady mathews and billy incardone both have instructional tapes out.
I don't play, but there are plenty of others here who do. I'll probably start learning after I get that whole pocketing 3 balls in a row thing down.tpdtom said:

My suggestion is Accu stats tapes. The commentary is as important as watching the matches. You get to hear different opinions on different shots that are available and the reasons why you should or should not shoot them. Sometimes the player will shoot a shot that is "ill advised" by the commentators and it works out very badly for them. Its a great way to learn the game and the thought processes of playing. JMO.

1) Get a copy of Shots, Moves, and Strategies.
2) Get a copy of Banking with the Beard
3) Get a copy of last year's Derby City (Efren put on a clinic)
4) Practice banking
Shotmaking is something you can practice, but you're probably going to have to find someone to play to learn how to move properly.
