$10,000 BU Playing-Ability-Exam Challenge

Looking forward to giving this a shot. Glad we have nearly 5 months to submit the exams.

No chance on the top prizes but I’ve got nothing to lose and can only gain by learning in the process.

The only people who need to rush are those who think they might have a shot at the perfect 100. Only the first person to reach 100 on Exam I will get the $2500 bonus (for 1st and the 100).

No chance on the top prizes but I’ve got nothing to lose and can only gain by learning in the process.
Anybody get enter the "lottery division" and have an equal chance at the $500, regardless of the score (as long as it is above 50).

I look forward to seeing your video(s).

Good luck,
Dave

submitters, please tip the helper, they are the humans suffering the indulgence of the shooter.

Having a runner is a different story, they're in control knowing the scheme(s) at hand better
than the shooter itself, even knows the shooter better than shooter knows itself.
Runners earn 10% minimum, 20% of a win.

just a note afoot...

I wish I had a "runner" or even a "helper." I tried to convince my wife, but she is surprisingly not interested, even with a promised "tip." :grin-square:

I'm working on Exam III today and hope to post something by tomorrow.

Get to work out there,
Dave

I'll tell her about the request to see if it works.

I'm not optimistic, but I'll try. :o

I just finished a pretty good effort (47) at Exam III, and I will post the video soon. I missed some of the easy shots, but I made some of the tough ones.

The challenge is on!

Get to work,
Dave

Here's my video:

Dr. Dave BU Exam III - 47 - 4/11/2020

I started slow but finished strong.

I look forward to seeing Exam I and Exam III videos from others,
Dave

PS: I plan to start working on Exam I tomorrow! This is the first time in a long while I've been excited about working hard on dedicated practice. I look forward to the boost my game usually gets with focused BU Exam work.

Did anybody work on the Challenge this Easter Sunday?

I prepared my table with donuts (since I just got it recovered) and did some Exam I practice. Boy, I was really rusty and sloppy with some of my skills, but draw sure is a lot easier with new cloth. I will try to film an official Exam I entry tomorrow before my cloth starts breaking in too much.

I look forward to seeing a bunch of AZB entries.

Good luck,
Dave

The Billiard University (BU) just announced a new challenge open through the end of August, 2020. You have a chance to win lots of money in this "virtual" video-based tournament, where there are no travel costs or entry fees ... only prize money! The BU is offering $10,000 total with a possible top prize of $5000. There is an open division for top players and a junior division for younger players. There is also a lottery division, where anybody can win money, regardless of their playing performance. The BU wants everybody to participate and benefit from this challenge, so please help spread the word. Have fun, and good luck winning some cash!

Here's the challenge website:
And here's a video introduction.

I look forward to seeing lots of AZB user participation. I plan to start practicing and posting soon myself.

Good luck,
Dave

My first attempt was a 41. I feel like I should have a lot more points. I may try again while the quarantine is on. Also, on #25, it's really hard to shoot for us short people. Reaching to the middle of the table to get a masse working - and with a hanging table light - is kinda hard. Would prefer if the cue ball was at the first diamond.

My video is uploading - 37 minutes! Yikes.

Nice job, especially for a first attempt. Did you practice all of the shots ahead of time? If not, you can probably get a much higher score with a little practice.

I've added your score and video link to the BU Exam Challenge page. You are currently in 2nd place (although, I would need your full name to make it official).

Do you plan to submit an Exam I entry also?

Catch you later,
Dave

I agree that this is tough to reach if you are not tall, but that is part of the challenge. I think being tall is mostly a handicap in pool, but not in situations like this (although, I didn't make this one either in my recent attempt, even though I should have). Efren doesn't have trouble reaching this one, and he's not very tall. Just be like Efren. :grin-square:

FYI, many examples like this can be found here:

I submitted Exam 1 with the 2018 challenge. I may do it again for this one, but it takes so long! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMwZ5bgySeI&feature=youtu.be

I went through the list of shots one time before I recorded just to make sure I wasn't taking too long on video setting them up, but there are definitely a number I should practice to get the benefit of recency.

I hope you decide to submit an Exam I score and video for this Challenge also. Do you think you could reach the 90 level with a little practice? I would think it is possible given your 73 in 2018.

Dave, judging just from the video attempts posted here, it looks like scoring is 4 points for making the first attempt, 3 for the second attempt, etc. Is that right?

Nope. 4 for the 1st, 2 for the 2nd, and 1 for the 3rd. If you want to give it a go, everything is documented here:

Exam III shot diagrams and procedure

Exam III score sheet

Good luck and have fun,
Dave
And if you want to give Exam I a try (I hope you do), everything you need is here:

I would be happy to give you some of my money if you put in a good effort.

Thanks. Setup stuff isn't my usual cuppa tea - but I can't get enough of my usual these days, so... maybe.
Don't think of it as "setup stuff." Think instead of each shot as a shot you must be able to execute to win an important game. Concerning Exam I, sometimes to win, you need to be able to draw the CB back a certain amount, or hit an accurate stun shot with the right speed, or get shape to a certain area.

Also, drilling like Exam I really forces one to focus on and improve one's fundamentals.

I'm sure you could do well if you give it a go. And the practice might even help your game. It always seems to help my game when I experience Exam I enjoyment.

Have fun,
Dave
