As many of you know, I travel the country covering pool events. I have noticed that there seems to be many variations of the 10 Ball Break & Run contests. Some get really big and some fizzle.

It would be really great if some of the people, who attend the Break & Runs Contests where these really HUGE pots are growing, would share the format that is used there.

Thanks!

What ever ya do, don't do what Felts is doing in Denver. I heard it isn't working and I don't know the details. Plus having thousands of pool players dollars just sitting there indefinitely, is/has turned into something different than originally planned.

Our local format is as follows:

- $12 entry fee into tournament - $2 of that automatically buys 1 ticket for the 10-ball b&r
- unlimitied amount of extra tickets can be purchased by anyone present up until the drawing is held.
- winner of drawing gets one chance to break and run a rack of 10 ball. Rack your own, inspected by tournament director. 10 made on break does not count as win, must be spotted. Does count as 10% towards pot.
- Dry break ends contest, no prize.
- Scratch or foul on break ends contest, no prize.
- Any balls pocketed on a legal shot count as 10% towards pot.
- Player can stop at any time and collect any winnings due.
- If player does anything other that make a legal shot that results in a ball being pocketed, thus continuing their inning; the contest ends and any potential winnings are reverted back to the pot.
- Pot continues to carry over until it is completely depleted by a successful break and run.

All I heard is the pot is around six thousand, the table you have to play on is a gaff break table and, if ya wanna get the skinny, ask for Sam Diepp, Mark Vidals wife.

Best pot builders

Out of the B&R pots, average and below average players are apt to put more dough in when there is a stipulation that you can allow another player to shoot for you, but you split half the pot with that player. Especially, if there are strong players around. This also keeps strong players coming because they may be able to take a free ride. Of course, the player and all B&R raffle participants should be required to play in that night's tournament.

One area pot was really going well (2 B&Rs @ 10k) and they instituted a requirement of being in so many tournaments prior before you could participate or win the tournament. I usually play or work on that particular night and rarely make it over there (maybe three times a year). But now each time that I have a break on that night, I don't even bother to go. Anyway that can hurt your tournament and make your scene stale. Especially, if there are a lot of traveling players that usually show up. BTW, I don't know if that pot has suffered any from it or not.

I have heard, never attended, similar format, but the tickets were worth $5.00, they draw five tickets, owners of all five try to break and run individually, three balls behind kitchen was enforced, the total from all their run gets distributed evenly, (10% for each ball pocketed toward the pot); do not know the details.

Never heard of anything like this before. Sounds like a really good idea if its run correctly and has no shady goings-on. Might mention it to the pool hall owner I go to and try get something like this happening.

Rules should include:
Must be in tournament to shoot
Must have played in 3 tournaments in past 6 months
Players above a certain skill level have marked tickets so that you can't just hand best player in the room your winning ticket.
I like where you have to either quit and take what you make or run it all. So if you miss a shot they get nothing. More dramatic and pot builds up quickly. Rarely done.
