Bryant insisted that the one-ball be on the center of the spot or that I (the TD) rack. Archer had been slugging himself and refused to continue if he couldn't freeze the one.
After a heated discussion, the spot was replaced and I announced that I would rack and that the players would be on the shot clock for the balance of the match.
I asked Bryant if he would be able to hear the ten second warning, since he was wearing earphones. He said he would be alright.
Sure enough, while measuring a kick shot, Bryant was given the ten second warning and, when the 30-second clock expired, was called for a foul.
Bryant, not aware that he had already fouled, said "extension". I was already headed to the table to give Archer ball-in-hand.
I understand why a lot of players like to use earphones, but this is a perfect example of how they can become a problem.
Bryant went on to a 15-12 win. Congratulations to him and to Archer for a great tournament.
