I have Asian, black, hispanic, and white friends who find that term used to describe Asians equally offensive.

I do not use the term "oriental" for people mainly because I've recently learned that some people, for whatever reason, find it offensive. I recently asked my Asian (Filipina) wife what she thought about it. She had no idea that anyone found it offensive!

That being said, I don't find any of the names applied to white people as being offensive to me and feel that people who are offended by such words are just too thin skinned! I think racial tensions would be much less problematic if people were to just remember what their mommy told them when they were a child, "sticks and stones......."

In the rare cases where the words are meant to be offensive, usually if you'd just consider the source, you'd see that the offender is making a fool of himself! In the cases where the words aren't meant to be hurtful, a wise person overlooks them or if the person is someone they care about, informs the individual that it's better said another way. In any case I don't see how a confrontation is a positive thing. It's usually just a misunderstanding!

just more hot air!

I really love Eric's post...one of my all time faves
You should re-read what I wrote, not what you think you remembered what I might have been saying.

I didn't quote it, but it went something like this:

Oriental is not a racial comment, I am Asian myself.

You should re-read what I wrote, not what you think you remembered what I might have been saying.

Theres a word that describes that (i just can't remember it). Thanks for ok'ing it "Mr. Oriental".

You should re-read what I wrote, not what you think you remembered what I might have been saying.

Now that I know you are policing these boards for us 'Orientals', I can live happier and safer knowing that a fellow Oriental has got my back.

You should re-read what I wrote, not what you think you remembered what I might have been saying.

By the way, I am Chinese, and I think the word ch!nk is ok, so don't worry, I got your back too. Lets have everyone call me and you a Ch!nk now, by the way..pulling ur eyelids to make slant-eyes..thats good in my book too.

Fish, where did you read all this other crap into what I said? I think you need to put the crack pipe down and re-read:

"While "Oriental" isn't politically correct, I don't see is as a slur. It seems like more of an outdated way of describing an ethnic group. This being my opinion only..."

FWIW, the term "Oriental" was never (as far as I know) used in a derogotory way. There are derogatory terms for Asian groups but (I)n (M)y (O)pinion, Oriental is not one of them. Now, it is again IMO only. It has nothing to do with "getting your back", "fellow Asian" and all that crap. This isn't a rallying call for all Asians to band together. Frankly, I don't even see where anyone is truly being harmed or demeaned. Also, your condescending comment about me giving it "Mr. Oriental's seal of approval" is even more ridiculous. Had I worded it something like "Well me's being Asian, I say it's OK", then I think i would deserve your comment. I never said that. Hell, who the hell even told you I was Asian?! I made a comment based on my own opinions formed thru my own life experiences. Again, I M O, the term Oriental came from a time when Asia was called, well, the Orient. Hence, Oriental. Fast forward to 2005, that term is now outdated but from the get go, it was never used in a derogatory way. The best analogy I can think of is that Blacks are no longer referred to as "Colored". Now the PC description is "African American" or simply "Black". Whatever.

Look Fish, if you're looking to pick a bone with someone, why don't you attack a group oof people that are "Politically Correct Nitpickers"? It's those jackasses that take defined groups of people to the other extreme. Can I get an Amen?

What can I tell ya? They're entitled to their opinion. Personally, I'm not as "Politically nitpicky-Correct" as some others, but the world's a big place.

Sorry, I missed ya in Vegas, hope you had fun too.

I believe everyone is entitled to my opinion :D

My friends and I are far from politically correct. We're a mixed group so we call each other chink, slant-eye, gook, border jumper, cracker, round-eye, et cetera. This is funny. It's when people use terms in all seriousness when referring to someone I am offended. I've been called chink, oriental, gook, n*gger, n*gger-lover, et cetera. Not funny. Is someone refers to me or any Asian as oriental, I correct them politely as I'm sure they're unaware that's it's a derogatory term.

It is a false sterotype... I'm ashamed to say I'm bad at math. I do play the violin, however. Classical, not fiddle!

Playing a musical instrument can be part of a stereotype too (I played classical Piano as a kid :D )

BAck on topic,

The Tiger trailer is the only theft, as far as I know. I didn't see anything nor hear of anything else happening while I was in town. Based on my conversation with others, I'm getting the impression that thieves are looking to steal trailers, not the contents of the trailer. Seems like whatever is in the trailer is just a bonus.

Maybe we should just call all Americans, Just Americans...

Here is something else to think about. The word Colored, and Negro are NOW POLITICALLY INCORRECT.

But if an African American kid, or Black Kids want to got to College they will accept help, or a scholarship from, The United Negro College Fund.

If a African American Kid, or Black Kids need legal help they will accept it services from, The NAACP, (aka The National Association for the Advancement of Color people)

Like I said something g to think about in a politically correct World. Can you say D O U B L E S T A N D A R D....

This is exactly why I suggested that a small army of civil servants go through all of the laws passed by the State and Federal lawmakers and bring them up to date for political correctness. Of course the state of political correctness evolves continuously, so the job would be never ending, but then again you will be paying taxes for the rest of your lives, so why not ? Oh ... wait ... perhaps it is not worth the cost and effort ... I guess you'll just have to live with it ... The hope would be that laws passed today and organizations created in this time will use acceptable terms. Too bad they may become politically incorrect in the future.

I've been to Mombasa, and toured the fort on the Indian Ocean. Things were a little more 'incorrect' when that fort was in it's original use, be glad we're progressing !

I also saw a "Reward for lost cues" sign posted. Apparently, cues were delivered to the wrong room at the Riv and never returned. Or something like that.

Besides the normal stuff, I didn't hear of any other trailer thefts. I guess, all we can do is to put the word out and hope that something will turn up for Corey and crew.

As someone that does a booth at Hopkins, its always risky carrying around this type of stuff. I heard 2 DCC's ago, and even last year there were issues.
We do Hopkins and even though we usually get in the lock up area, we take all our cues to the room EVERY night. Its a pain in the butt.
Every once in a while though you hear good things. Like Salazar leaving a rolled Porper case in the elevator, and getting them all back later.

I don't know the outcome but my impression is that the Hotel goofed and the owner is screwed. I hope I'm wrong.

On an unrelated forum note:

When are we gonna play a ladder match, Joe?

Nope, sorry but still no place called Orient, therefore, no Orientals.

My dog? Well, unlike you and yours, he has the benefit of 1500 years of good breeding. He was being bred for intelligence and temperament :p

All I did was type what was written in the dictionaries, if you ever have access to one you could look it up. I went to one of my new dictionaries and sure enough it is now noted that Oriental is now dated and can be offensive. I certainly had no idea this was the case and have probably been politically incorrect at times, if fact someone in the poolhall may have told me that but I probably thought he was kidding me. I had no idea it was offensive to some percentage of the Asians.

As far as you dog is concerned it is great that he has had such good breeding, it is too bad your lineage didn't have the same breeding but at least there is someone in your family with intelligence and temperament.

Speaking of Political Correctness there is a WORD I hear all the time and HATE, it is “ISSUES”

When America was a Great Country like in 1941.

We use to Design, Developed, and Manufacture Products.

American mostly were employed with good manufacturing jobs with Benefit Plans & Pensions

We Solved Problems

We Exported American made Product to the World

When stuff like the Infamous Attach on Pearl Harbor took place, Americans waiting for nothing, and immediately fought back.

Today in 2005

American Shop at Wally World that sells most Imported Goods from our old Friends in Red China, Indiana, Pakistan, and other THIRD World Countries.

You call American Express, America on Line, for Customer Service/Support and Speak mostly with folks in exotic place like India, and other Exotic places.

American Manufacturing Jobs are being Exported Offshore, & to place like Mexico, etc.

Many americans are working, for Wally World with little or No Benefits, in substandard working conditions, for sub standard wages.

We nerve talk about the word “PROBLEM”, everything is just an ISSUE.
