Will a 12x36 grizzly lathe work for tapering butts, shafts and do ring joints? Or Do I need the 13x40?
Thanks

Measure the front of the chuck to the tailstock. Some 12x36 models will work; some won't. Remember, you'll have a center in both ends, reducing the distance even further.

Carriage travel trumps bed-length.
Remove the chuck and you pick-up another 4-5 inches.
IMO, a short bed 12-13" swing lathe for joint work
with a dedicated taper/shaper is a better way to go.
Both machines are then 'dedicated' and your set-up
and tear-down time is all but eliminated.

Will a sedan haul a family of 5 and get groceries at the same time, or do you need a station wagon?
