14.1 Back to Square One...

i've devolved into a 14.1 novice and i can't figure out why. this game is freaky like that. i remember watching a game of straight at the fool hall played by mcchesney who was a very good 14.1 player and excellent 9baller. he looked inept, lost some money and he was NOT a happy camper. i also recalled watching rempe vs reyes and rempe of all people was having all kinds of trouble stringing racks together.... what is it about this game that turns moderate good and great players into frustrated monkeys?

on the upside... i left my modified $19.00 Sportcraft cue in the public rack at the pool hall because i fitted my mcdermott graphite cue with an old viking shaft. it plays fine now. the stock graphite shaft on that McCue was too rigid causing uncontrollable deflection.

I dont know sausage. I have been running 26-29 balls almost every time I get to the table but then the pool gods come down and I miss a shot I make a high percentage of the time. Whats really messed up is that I will run those two racks freaking perfect, no hard shots and good patterns. I am just hoping I get past two rackdom!

well at least you are seeing the racks. i'm seeng the balls like i've never played the game. it's freaking me out....

its because you dont have your pool table any more. That is a curse and sacrilegious to the pool gods, now you must suffer!!!!

Sadly I feel your pain. I hadn't played straight pool in probably 4-5 years. In January I saw the 2010 AZ Straight Pool Challenge and said I'd give it a try. So, the first time I set up the break shot I ran 32 (my life high is only 54...I'm only slightly better than crappy). I haven't been close since.

What really frosts me is that I purchased the 2006 World Open cd's. I watch those and about 98% I know the routes that the pros will take. So, I get on the table...I aint got a clue....

LOL.... cursing the pool gods probably doesn't help me either. but i clearly told them that i'm going to get another table after i move.

maybe paying for pool time effects my concentration.

lol.... but the freaky thing about this game is that some pros also have the same problem. jim rempe on his video says that "straight pool IS an easy game, if you know which ball to shoot next." but then he had a heck of a time doing just that against reyes.

i'm trying to figure out what makes this game seem easy one day and impossible the next.

I think you'll find that any game is like that. I've seen pros fall to pieces in snooker, 14.1, 9 ball etc. And I've experienced my own meltdowns in all of those games (including today).

I've certainly had days where I gave up with a high run of 15-20 for the day. I've had matches where I only got past 10 balls a handful of times. I think in the case of straight pool it's a lack of concentration compounded by tricky layouts.

yeah, and perhaps lack of sleep or allergies. i guess this is why it's easier to be more consistent at 9ball than 14.1. knowing this however, gives me no solace....

GOD !!! I's love to be able to say that !!!
