Thanks for the update Jim. I couldn't make it today but got home to see if there was any news. It sounds like Parica is playing good, as well as Santos and Ginky. Who has the high run so far? Do they plan to change the name of the event to Jack Calovito Memorial?

Yes, Bill announced to everyone on Friday that the future name of the tournament will be changed to the Jack Colavita Memorial Straight Pool Championship.

Comet has gold crown IVs with simonis 860 cloth with tight pockets.

Comet billiards has probably the best maintained equipment you could possibly ask for although, I have to disagree with cgfx as far as the pockets being tight though.

I'm almost embarassed to admit that I didn't get back to the tournament yesterday (due to some home projects that needed my attention) so I wasn't able to give any more updates. However I am today going to bounce between the Straight Pool tournament and the Blaze 9-Ball Tournament at Rockaway Billiards.

You're a lucky duck, Railbird! Wish I could join you. I'm stuck at home doing some projects that not only need my attention, but are long overdue!

Looking forward to reading all about it upon your return! Have fun! :)

Well the Fourth Annual NJ Straight Pool Championship has come to an end, and here is how today's matches panned out:

(12:00 Noon)
Winners Side Match for the Hot Seat
Marlon Manalo def. Dan barouty 150-42

One Loss Side
George "Ginky" SanSouci def. Steve Lipsky 150-142

The Ginkster had both the first 100 ball run of the tournament (102 in his first match on Friday, and he also had the high run of the tournament with a 132 ball run yesterday, Marlon Manalo also had a 103 ball run)

(3:00 PM)
One Loss Side
Dan Barouty def. George "Ginky" SanSouci 150-94

(6:00 PM)
Finals
Marlon Manalo def. Dan Barouty 200-135
With Dan leading at 135 to 126 he attempted a tough combination into the side pocket which also would open up a few balls from the pack but unfortunately the ball hit the high point of the pocket and didn't fall, Marlon stepped to the table and "you guessed it" ran 74 and out for the Championship.

On another note, the Blaze 9-Ball tournamanet at Rockaway Billiards saw some top caliper play today with 26 players, Mike Miller knocked Santos Sambajon out of the tournament with a score of I believe 6-1, Bob Guerra the owner of Rockaway beat Karen Corr in the first round 7-1. Last I heard Frankie Hernandez and Al Lepena were playing the Final Match, so Frankie has a chance to win back to back Blaze 9-Ball Tournaments.

Manolo shot extremely well but a few rolls different and it could have easily been a repeat victory for Dan Barouty. This match held everyone's attention. Manolo did get out of line a couple times and had to come with a few very tough shots during the course of his runout.

Wow what a great tournament. HUGE thank you to Comet Billiards!!! I thoroughly enjoyed watching for the last three days. The were some words of tribute to Jack Colavita before the finals today from his family as well as from a few of his friends including Bill from Comet Billards.

The words were clearly spoken from the heart and it was very moving. Many of those who knew Jack and even some who didn't shed a few tears.

If you love straight pool make an effort to attend this tournament next year. It was GREAT and I am already looking forward to seeing it again next year.

:)

Bill Haley told me that the pockets they use are the tightest they can be by BCA limitations. I dont go there that often and when I do I usually play on pocket on the triple shimmed table.

Tahnks for the updates, Railbird! I really wish I could have been there. Unfortunately, I was out of town until yesterday. Sounds like another great tourney. For those that knew Jack, maybe we can help carry on one of his wishes of "keeping Straight alive for the future".

It's nice to see Steve Lipsky back on his game. Nice Finish Steve!!!!

Thanks AC. I've been practicing a little bit more lately than I had been. I was still quite disappointed in my overall play, but I had a great time. Not enough can be said about the staff and playing conditions at Comet. What a wonderful poolroom.

Thanks again,
Steve

Comet truly is the best players room I have ever been to. The equipment is always in good condition and I have to complement their table mechanic. I played there the week before the 14.1 tournament and they just had all the tables redone in preparation for that event. This may be a difficult concept to explain in words, but the tables, despite having just been recovered, played absolutely fantastic. No sliding, not extremely quick, no pockets pulling balls in, etc. Whoever their mechanic is does one hell of a job on those tables and imho they play pretty much the same from the day they get covered right on down the line until Bill Haley feels that they need to be done again. Add to that the spacious layout, comfortable players chairs, clean restrooms, and friendly staff and you have what is truly one of the nicest rooms around. In fact, since I only travel there for tournaments, I always try to find some way to spend a couple of bucks while I'm there to support Bill and Marsha and their fabulous room.

Steve-

Hope to see you this weekend there for the 'other' straight pool event.

Hi Steve
Is there anything you did in your Straight pool game to help you see the patterns? If so would you mind sharing some of your knowledge?

Thank you in advance
