14.1 rules question

Here is the set up:

I have just made the 14th ball and the 15th ball is in the rack. The 15th ball goes on the the head spot with the cue ball left in position.

I shoot at the 15th ball on the head spot but I miscue and scratch, and the 15th ball on the head spot never moves.

Here is the question:

Where does the cue ball go now? On the center spot? Anywhere in the kitchen? Anybody know?

Since you scratched, the incoming player has the cue ball in hand in the kitchen. Same as any other time a player scratches.

As DogsPlayingPool said, it's ball in hand in the kitchen. The head string is not part of the kitchen, so the ball on the head spot remains there and is playable.

Good point

I do not believe that I ever seen that come up and I did not know the right answer to that question. Thanks for giving us that info.

The area behind the Head String Line (upper part of the table) where the Head Spot is located (where you break from).
The place where you rack the balls is called the Foot Spot
It would be best to buy a rule book and it will point out all the areas on a table.

I always thought the base of the ball had to be outside of the head string. If the ball is on the spot I thought it was considered to be in the kitchen?

when i read this i laughed out loud. just when you think you know all the rules, someone does something crazy. this is in fact, uncharted 14.1 territory. if you have it on video, you might be able to get it in the guiness book of world records. lol... if it happened to my opponent, i'd let him shoot it over because i'm pretty darned sure i couldn't lose to this guy. hahaha...

No, if the base of the ball is on the head string (which the spot is) the ball is considered playable. This is covered in the general rules of pocket billiards as follows:

From the WPA website:

1.5 Cue Ball in Hand

When the shooter has the cue ball in hand behind the head string and all the legal object balls are behind the head string, he may request the legal object ball nearest the head string to be spotted. If two or more balls are equal distance from the head string, the shooter may designate which of the equidistant balls is to be spotted. An object ball that rests exactly on the head string is playable.

From the BCA website:

3.10 CUE BALL IN HAND BEHIND THE HEAD STRING
This situation applies in specific games whereby the opening break is administered or a player’s scratching is penalized by the incoming player having cue ball in hand behind the head string. The incoming player may place the cue ball anywhere behind the head string. The shooting player may shoot at any object ball as long as the base of the object ball is on or below the head string...

Thanks for taking the time to answer

I will buy a 14:1 rule book tomorrow

Thanks everyone!

Thanks everyone for your replies!

I was the one who scratched. I was trying to draw the ball back one rail and into the stack, but when I missed-cued the cue ball jumped straight over the 15th ball and into the corner pocket.

But, we did play the shot in question correctly... after about five minutes of talking about it. But since we weren't totally sure of how to play it I just wanted to ask :-)
