When I first started playing straight pool I had a local at the hall that would do this religiously to me. I would practice this shot for hours for two reasons one I didn't know any better and I wanted to come with a good shot next time he did it. It is quite easy to play a good safe with a full stack sitting below the spot

I've been playing in a straight pool league for a few years now, yet
I did not know the opening break foul could result in an optional rerack.
Because of this thread, I looked that rule up, and ironically, in my very first straight pool match of this season last Friday, I fouled and the guy opted for me to rerack.
Had I not looked up that rule because of this thread, I would have not known that rule and might have tried to question him.
