Is there a difference between the two? Were they originally different games? I have always used both terms to describe the same game.

They are the same .

Straight pool, which is also called 14.1 continuous and 14.1 rack, is a cue sport in which two competing players attempt to pot as many billiard balls as possible without playing a foul. Wikipedia
Equipment: Cue sports equipment
First played: 1910
Highest governing body: World Pool-Billiard Association
Team members: single competitors or doubles

i have nothing to base this on
but i was told straight pool was called 14.1
because after 14 balls are pocketed 1 ball remains and the game goes on

No difference. The gist of it is that the predecessor to straight pool was known as continuous pool and the fundamental difference was that the balls weren't re-racked until all fifteen had been made. When the change was made to rack the balls once only fourteen balls had been pocketed, the game was renamed 14.1 continuous, but it's now known familiarly as both 14.1 and also straight pool.
