1990s Reno Sands Regency Cloth

I've been watching some of the old matches from the Sands Regency tournament in Reno during the 1990s. I have alot of them on Accu-Stats DVDs. The tables seemed to be either a Gold Crown or the AMF Advantage table.

And my question is - were they playing on brand new cloth?

jay is the person to ask as to back then, did they reuse cloth on tournament tables as they moved them around?

money wise it would make sense.
 
Reno switched to 760 in 88 as I recall. I went from 86-90 for most of them, I didn’t play in them, but did play on the tables after hours. And on practice tables there was some action.

Why do you want to know?
 
I "think" all the tournaments before the Diamond Pro-Am table always had brand new cloth. The whole tables had to be stripped down for each event, including the cloth.

I suppose if they were always reusing the same tables from stop to stop, the table mechanics could have purposely left the cloth long beyond the staples, and left the rail cloth on. I doubt it though.
 
Also every old event the commentators would usually say something like "the cloth is new, so the player might play a different style, etc".
 
i had good action with the players that came down from the northwest but it was over at the keystone cue and cushion.
most of the top players just lost all their money in the pit and stood around barking and looking for non existent backers for whatever.

I assumed since this was one of the biggest tournaments in the country - twice a year - that it would absolutely be played on brand new cloth. Yet on some of the Accu-Stats videos I have it appears to be used cloth.

Just curious you might say.

i wish they all played on used slow cloth that didnt slide and funnel balls into the pockets.
it would be more fun knowing how and what they shoot at and play on the same equipment i play on.

The first couple times i went to Reno the cloth was Stevens I’d guess, was normal old school cloth. Then the 760 showed up with 5” pockets Ana the good players were running out sets.

Efren and Parika were doing a prop bet on a practice table just outside the main tourney room. Rack 15 balls, break take BIH and runout. Guys were laying them 3/2 on the $ and they mopped up. Most guys were betting $75 to win $50, they settled using chips from the casino downstairs. Let’s just say Efren and Jose had a very profitable night.

I was pretty new to pool back then, a couple years in, I remember that well. Even for me the tables were super easy.

I remember that well, who can run 15 balls? This was before anyone really knew Efren on the west coast, fast forwards a couple years it was a different story

the old rubber backed and worsted or whatever cloth was slow even when new. new cloth played the same about.
now i see 760 on a pool table in new shape its basically a gaffed cloth to me. and with pocket angles closer together its all balls go in.
after broken in the 760 and 860 for sure start rattling balls when worn in, tighter pockets. and ruins the game for me.
 
this thread is gonna end up in "when i was young the tables had gravel instead of cloth and old Poolie McPoolface had a stroke that no modern player has"-territory
 
One thing to consider is that there was also a larger amateur event for the USPPA members also happening in Reno at the same event for many years. Tons of players who didn't enter the pro event, the USPPA was sort of an early Fargo rating system. The cloth probably didn't look new after the USPPA event, but still played pretty fresh IIRC for the pro event.

The table were Gold Crowns and, at least the ones I played on, had big pockets. Absolute buckets considering that top pros were playing and the cloth started out new. There is a reason guys like Earl got a reputation for running 4 or 5 packs in less that 10 minutes on those tables.

I never liked the rubber backed cloth. I liked Steven’s 21oz cloth. It was a bit easier for the first week, then it would tighten up a little, nothing like 760,860 does.

I’m not a fan of pitty pat pool on super fast equipment
 
The cloth was always new at the start of the USPPA armature portion of the tournament which started in the beginning of the week. The USPPA portion of the tournament alone drew something like 300 or more participants mainly from Northern California. The pro portion of the tournament usually started towards the end of the week. It too drew all the great players. It was a wonderful bi-annual event that allowed the fans to get up close and personal with all the great players. I the think the activities director for the Sands was a woman named Barbara Woodward if my memory serves me correctly, and i think she was largely responsible along with Gene Starey of the USPPA for putting this event on for so many years.

Another great thing about those old tournaments was that Ted Harris would have his big lathe set there to do any kind of cue repair you could immagine on the spot. The best of times to be sure!

I was watching the 1992 Sands Reno Finals last night between Buddy Hall and Johnny Archer. Bill Incardona was commentating and he said they were playing on Simonis. I believe he also said 760.
