So whats the actual rule about jump shots in 1p. I know this may vary from place to place but I always understood it as you could jump but could not use a jump cue.

Today I had to jump a ball that i was just bairly hooked with so I just elevated the cue bla bla bla. The guy was like your not aloud to jump bla bla bla.

What is the actual rule
 
I'm sure by Grady's rules you can not use a jump stick.....I don't think you can use it any major one pocket tournys either. Gambling is a whole different animal, It should be talked about before session begins.
 
It all depends upon what kind of agreement two getleman entered into before the begining of the game.In the recently concluded US Open in Las Vegas ,jump cues were not allowed but one could jump.Cheers

From what I've always played, they are allowed, just with your shooting cue (no jump cues).

To be honest with you, I don't think I've ever tried a jump shot in one hole... cue ball control is everything, and unless you make your shot, it's too unpredictable.

Grady actually demonstrates some 1P jump shot examples on his instructional videos. The common rule is jump shots are allowed in 1P with your playing cue.
 
If you are gambling, playing one pocket and you use a jump cue and your opponent says that you cannot use it, just tell him, too bad for him and that he should have brought that up before you started to play. In tournament play, the rules are clearly stated or just check with the tournament director.
 
Most commonly, no jump cues, but jumping with your shooting cue is permitted.
Be sure before you begin.

The question was

To the people responding that talk about jump cues, that was not the question. It was can you jump in 1p? Jumping in one pocket has been allowed ever since I have been playing and thats a long long time. The game is a game of inches and cue ball control. Jumping is jumping and it happens in one pocket all the time when you have to get over the edge of a ball to make your object ball. That shot is easily executed and with control and to disallow it would be a disservice to the game. Many a time I have jumpe a quarter of a ball and drawn the cue ball back for shape. When people talk about jumping a ball they seem to always refer to the whole ball in their mind so assume it might be illegal or have to use a jump cue to do it. If the shot is a legal shot it is not against the rules. i.e. a double hit. There is not need to discuss it ahead of time.
 
I once heard a story about Rafael Martinez jumping the stack with his playing cue. Heard he was about a cueballs width away from the stack!!! Banks the ball straight back (length of the table) and procceds to run out!!! This was at the Hard Times Jamboree in Sac Town.
