1st Cue Question

I've recently gotten back into playing pool after 15+ years off. I've been using an old (not that good) cue and I'm looking to get a new one. I would like to stay in the $100-160.00 range.

I have a friend who uses a Schmelke and likes it alot and they have quite a few in the price range I'm looking at.

Can I get some feedback/suggestions on this manufacturer as well as others. Also, what do I look for as far as joints and tips. I know I prefer a med. to hard tip, but I am ignorant to what else is important.

Buy a Cue like you would buy a Bottle of Wine. Buy the one you like the Feel of in you price range, and forget about all the SALES HYPE associated with thre sales process.

There are several cue manufacturers that will be suggested in that price range. Schmelke isn't one of them.

For my money, I'd go with a Joss Cue.

It does not matter at all. Ignore all the hype and trendy cue terms. Just find something that you feel comfortable with, the weight, feel etc.. so long as you use the same cue every time you play, you will be accustomed to that cue. A good player can play with anything. Great play comes down to practice, dedication, sweat and toil, not $500 on the latest pool technology. It has nothing to do with what make/brand you play with. Remember the greatest cueman of all-time, Stephen Hendry, used the cheap cue he first played with as a kid for all his world championships. The cue was warped (one pro mentioned it was like a banana) and sub-standard. When it was accidentally broken by baggage handlers in 2003, he got a new cue and won his first tournament back. A bad workman blames his tools, if you can play, you can play. Period.

I'd like to add Lucasi to the list.

A very nice cue for the price. It's what I usually recommend to people looking for a first cue.

Try to find a place that stocks Lucasi, McDermott, Joss, and/or Fury cues. Try some of them out. Most Lucasi cues hit about the same. Most McDermott (with 3/8-10 wood joints) hit about the same. But, a Lucasi and a McDermott hit very differently. It's a matter of personal opinion as to which is better.
