1st Custom (used) cue - Down to a Prewitt

Hi, everyone.

I am looking to retire my Schon LTD and purchase my first custom cue.

I live in the Los Angeles area, but I'm currently working in the hurricane-hit cities in Texas, helping an insurance company settle its remaining hurricane claims. Due to the long hours and my current location, I can't spare the time to locate and test a large selection of cues or guage their "feel", "hit", "sound", etc.

Although not the best way to purchase a custom-cue, due to my situation, I will likely purchase my first custom cue used and online.

I spent the last 6 months talking to friends, other pool players and reading all the posts I could on this forum to get a good "feel" for a custom cue I'd be happy with. After taking into account all that I read & was told, and filtering what I visually like about a cue, I've narrowed my choice down to an Ed Prewitt cue.

I'm 99% set on a Prewitt, but because I have not found one I "visually" like (loaded with a good amount of Ivory, points, etc.) in my price range of $1,500 - $3,000, I'm beginning to feel I may never become an owner.

At this point, my reality is I'll have to get lucky and run into a seller willing to part with a Prewitt before he offers it to the public (postings in my range sell before I see them).

I sometimes contemplate buying my second choice, a used PFD Studio, as I often find nicely loaded PFDs in the AZ sale section. Based on what I've learned, I believe I'd be happier with the Prewitt cue.

As I wrote above, I'm 99% set on a Prewitt, but since it appears I can't afford what I want, I am now considering that loaded PFD. I would love to hear from anyone who has either shot with (on a long-term basis) or owned a Prewitt, PFD Studio or both:

1. Which cue do you prefer and what are your reasons?
2. Can you describe the feel and hit of each cue? A comparison and grading of both would be greatly appreciated.
3. Is the feel or hit of the Prewitt / PFD constant with every cue they make?
4. Can you direct me to any detailed reviews of either of these cues or cue makers? I'd really like to read more to help make my decision.
5. Any and all information you can provide on these cues would be greatly appreciated.

Please keep my current situation in mind and remember I can't locate these cues for testing before I purchase online.

I would recomend posting a "Wanted" ad in the F/S section asking people/sellers to PM you if they have a Prewitt available for sale. Also, check with Martin - "Jazznpool". He may have some Prewitts.

Post is wanted/for sale section and do use the search function to find a Prewitt. From there it's just a matter of negotiating a price.

Why are you changing from the Schon? Have you played with a Prewitt and like it better?
 
Eddie's cues.....

Having 2 Prewitts in my possession ( With 2 more being made as we speak ) I can tell you that Eddie's cues are TOP of the list! His very picky wood selection and his extensive knowledge with machinery allow Eddie to make not only a beautiful piece of art, but one that is a definite players cue! You may not have the money to buy one right out, but I can tell you one thing, its worth every penny when you get one! After the first one, I knew right then, I didnt want to play with any other cue

Most of the Prewitts listed in the FS section are either new, way out of my price range or not visually to my liking. I definitely will continue looking.

The Schon has given me years of enjoyment. I am just ready to move on to a custom cue.

One of the things I liked with the few Prewitts I saw were his points - Nice and sharp. I have not been able to shoot with an EP yet.

Would you mind sharing more details on Ed's workmanship and the playability of the EP cues you own?

Anything you can share will greatly be appreciated.

EP cues

Well, first off Eddie's cues are all made to perfection, from the inlays, the wrap, the finish, points etc, everything is perfect and flawless. His cues can vary on the hit depending if you get his standard taper or your own preference. Eddie's standard taper and tip diameter is 13mm and is a shorter pro taper and hits extremely stiff. I play using with an 11mm tip diameter with Efren Reyes taper ( As made by Judd Fuller ). I gave eddie my judd shaft and he copied the taper to perfection with his expert knowledge of cnc work. Both my cues needless to say play AWESOME! The hit is stiff with very little flex due to the taper but also his choice wood selection. Eddies attention to detail and thorough knowledge of the best woods to use for your cue are beyond anyones expectations. His customer service is just as great! A very willing and able guy who can give you waht you want aesthetically as well as performance wise. Better get on his list cuz that wait is 2+ years maybe more now! one of mine will be done in about a year and a half and the other in 2. ALl worth the wait to get an ep made to my exact specs!
 
PM az'er CUEHOBBY I believe he has a Prewitt for a very fair price.

Thank you very much for your description. Ed ought to pay you for advertising his cues. I'm sold.

I am pretty sure I'll purchase used my first time out with EP as I don't have enough for new and I can't wait years for the cue.

I've played with Judd, Joss West, Cognoscenti, Tad, Josey, Southwest and im telling you, for some damn reason Eddie's just does it for me. Good luck, I wish you thebest of luck in obtaining one. You know martin Bick westerncue.com has a VERY nice 5 fancy ring purpleheart black pigskin wrap available its 2k+ some change but its WORTH every damn penny!

I saw that cue. I'm not a fan of purpleheart and I'm looking for a cue with points. A little ivory would be nice as well.

I really like the first cue on his site but it is out of my price range.

I'm hopeful I'll find a EP that's right for me soon.

Found it!

Thought I'd post a follow-up to my original post.

I finally purchased a Monster Ed Prewitt from AZ'r ActionCentral last month and had it shipped to Louisiana where I'm working temporarily.

I (nervously) "Manned-Up" and spent twice the amount I was comfortable spending, especially without ever hitting with the cue in person.

Once it arrived, I breathed a large sigh of relief when I discovered it was in pristine condition as Jeff described and looked incredible.

I finally put 3-days worth of play on a table in New Orleans and I'm EXTREMELY happy with the way the cue feels, hits and sounds. I simply can't describe how incredible this puppy plays!

It is simply the perfect Prewitt I was searching for.

Thanks to Jeff for putting up with all my pre-purchase questions and delivering as promised. I also want to thank everyone in this thread (especially PistolPat for all the advice in the PMs), Ed Prewitt and the guys at Hard Times in Bellflower, CA for allowing me to hit with their Prewitt cues.
