2 shafts

(Assuming the're both the same tip size and approximately the same weight)

Do you sort of alternate, or do you pick one as you main gun and just have the other as back-up? How'd you decide which one?

When I recently got my new cue.I just grabbed the first one out of my case and just went with it.I just use the second shaft as a back up.After tinkering with my shaft, i had it cut down to 12.75 mm.I have smaller hands so this made it comfortable to me.I think it is better to just stick with one of them instead of switching. Each shaft has its own little nuances.Hope this helps

Nuances is the correct way to describe it alright! No two wood shafts will play exactly the same! Even if they measure the same and made by the same maker. The wood will have slight nuances that makes each one play slightly or even greatly different.

i would advice that you find two shafts that you are comfortable with. one will probably feel better, that will be your main playing shaft. but you need to play with the other enough to be comfortable with it. hopefully you'll never need the other shaft, but if you don't have it in your bag when you do need it, you're going to wish you did. and if something does happen to your main shaft and you have to switch shafts then you're gonna want to be able to shoot your same game with the other shaft.

thanks

Keep in mind, that if you just shoot with the other shaft while the other stays in the case, the unused shaft will have a terrible tip if you need to use it in a real situation. I think the tip kind of dries if not used for a while... On the other hand, if you have a brand new unused shaft, it will increase the resale value of the cue...

I mainly shoot with a schon and the shaft that came with it. I have a joss shaft and another schon shaft for that cue. The joss shaft is very close to the original schon shaft in size and how it hits. I'll use the original schon shaft 90 percent of the time, and will get out the joss shaft and use it now and then just so I know how it hits. The other schon shaft has been test hit a few times, but not played with.

I also carry another cue with me, so if the schon has a problem its possible I'd just switch cues. Every shaft is different. The joss shaft I played with for a long time so I know it well, and it has the same taper and tip size.

Me I'm crazy, I carry one shaft with a hard tip and the other one with a soft tip. That way if for some reason or another I find a table that just plays so fast I can't adjust with the hard tip I can switch to the soft, 9/10 times that keeps me from over hitting everything. Both shafts at one time have been my main shaft for years at a time so I pretty much know how both of them play.

Like you Brandon, I have two shafts, but I had Olivier make one of them stiffer than the other (one advatage of having a custom cue made). I have played with both as my "main" at one time or other, so I know how they both hit. Right now I am playing with the stiffer shaft (about 13.15mm)with a Killer tip and I love the way it hits. It also makes jumping very easy without having to resort to the jump cue.
In the end, I think it really just depends on the person and personal preference.

My decision always had to do with, "which one do I make more balls with, miss less often, and move it around the table easier". They can have identical specs and made by the same manufacturer or cuemaker and play/feel differently. Just experiment....

My Cue each have TWO SHAFTS, and I ALTERNATE um... :o

Thanks for the opinions.

I mostly use the same shaft. Probably, with the same thoughts of familiarity. But, then, as the tip wears down, I'll switch to increase my overall mileage.

I think, too , that, over time, with two shafts, you'll end up putting another tip on one of them and it will, either, be an improvement, or, not - then that will affect which is numero uno, until you change something else.

I know a guy that, after about an hour, will switch to his other Schon shaft with the overt appearance that shaft #1 is not performing up to his expectations. But the thing is, he does it just about everytime we play...
