It's round robin, groups of six players, two hours between matches. 3 players advance. Round robin play is today and Friday. The single elimination phase begins on Saturday with races to 7. Sunday is the quarter finals to the finals, races to 7, 9, and 11.

The Softest Draw

The Asian #1 Shin Mei Liu has definitely landed the softest group. There is not a ranked player in her group.

She has to face, Naomi Williams- Canada, Johanna Espinoza - Venezuela, Tamara Rademakers - Nederlands, Tammy Duff - South Africa, and the qualifier from Taiwan, Lai Hui Shan.

Thxs!!! But now it says that my mediaplayer can't play it..... damn!!!!

Allison Fisher vs. Chan Ya Ting

Currently, Allison trails Taiwan's Chan Ya Ting 3:0.

Allison just scratched on the 8! Now she is down 4:0.

And not looking happy at all.

The fans seem dejected, as if they are not getting their money's worth. Well, we have seen Allie come back from worse.

Allison to break.

Chan comes up dry on the break and leaves Allison a shot at the 1. Allison has missed the one ball! Chan didn't get a prize though as there is no pocket for the one.
She attempts to thin it and play safe but comes up short. Allsion has a clear shot and she drills it in the corner. From there she runs out ina textbook manner. 4:1 Chan.

Chan vs Allison Fisher.

Allison's at the table - sorry for the ESPN like coverage. :-)

shooting at the 2 with a tough out. Gets perfect on the three. Great power draw with reverse to get shape on the four. The five is tied up though. Allison plays position to play safe. Allison leaves Chan a full ball. Chan leaves Allison a tricky safe. Allison kicks it safe leaving only a half ball down table. Chan shoots the 5 uptable and leaves Allison a full ball but no pocket. Allison plays the five up and straight down and the cueball up table. Chan leaves a bank but Allison elects to play another safe and leaves the 5 on the end rail and the cueball on the other end. Chan makes a great bank and splits the wicket!!! She shoots the six but leaves herself straight in on the 7 and is forced to ue the bridge to shoot it. She has less than optimal position but a rather easy 9 ball which she makes.

Ya-Ting Chan is here through the qualifier. What are the odds that in 2007 a qualifier would win both the men's and women's World Championships? Well, this is one qualifier who has served notice that the world's number one player can be beaten.

Tiffany Nelson and Pan Xiao Ting

PIcking up the game at 4:4. Tiffany was faced with a jump shot that she missed and Pan has made a textbook runout to win on the hill. :-(

Tiffany MUST win her next two to have any chance to make it out of the group stage. She has definitely had one of the toughest draws in this tournament so far. I predict that Tiffany will come out firing on all cylinders tomorrow.

Pics

There are a few places to get pics of the event.

One is my web albums on Picasa

Another is Steven Lin's blog - in chinese but he takes great pics.

Please tell me if the Picasa link is a problem. I will be uploading more pics soon and on my Flickr account if I can.

My reports are brought you courtesy of Fury Cues, Sterling Gaming, and CueSight Billiard Supplies. Please show them some love sometime for paying me to be here.

You must install media player ver 9 at least.

When I tried to update mine from a 7 to a 9 it said that there were no higher ones available. Does that mean my computer is too old to install 9? Thank you. Johnnyt

Can someone post the complete group standings after day 1? Can't believe i'm not there. Thank you.

John,

Thank you so much for the updates.:)

Hope Tiffany will make her way through possibly one of the toughest draw in the tournament.

The performance of the Japanese player, Yukiko Hamanishi, is a bit unexpected, she must be playing the best game in her life, and I hope she will keep it up. she can get out of her group for sure now, it seems.

Other than Karen Corr, and Jeanette Lee, all the best female players in the world are there, it just does not get any better than this. So wish I was there.:(

Richard

Helena got drilled 5-0 by a Japanese player. Im looking for 3-4 Japanese in the final 16 but probably only one in the final 4.

She is not ranked #1 in the World, she is #1 on the US womens tour. Jasmin is the #1 in the World rankings.

Back - Trying to wake up!

I was up until 4am local time. Got a few hours sleep and was off to a press conference with Allison Fisher and Orbis Eye Care Charity. Allison has signed up to be a spokesperson for this charity which provides free eye surgery, (no not the laser kind) all over the world. More on that later.

As noted Helena got the DONUT from the strong Japanese contingent. Helena stated in an interview that the pockets are tight. They are not. The pockets are like buckets and the tables are playing very soft.

This is allowing for some upsets where players making shots that they would otherwise miss. It's very difficult in a short race for the better player to assert themselves as the match can get away from them quickly.

I am going to check on Tiffany Nelson's match, I will be back soon.
