2007 Canadian Championships: List of players

Yes. The odds here are pretty good.

In Ottawa and immediate surrounding area there are about 7 rooms and soon to be 8. There are 3 on the Quebec side, 10 minute drive, one in the east end, one in center town, and soon to be 3 west end.

Not bad pool room to people ration given that we have about 1 million people here. It's no Calgary, but it's what we have.

Terminus: Alymer
Terminus: Hull
Club de Billard: Gatineau

Kevin, if you ever get the chance to go to Canada, the city of Ottawa is not too bad a place to visit. I am assuming that you are a male Kevin ;)

Dave, has done some casual investigative work on the apparent gender imbalance in Ottawa in years gone by
Now I really want to go:cool: I am very impressed with the organization and the appearance of professionalism regarding this tournament. How does this championship compared to some we have here in the states? Any experience for a comparison?

Kevin

< spent about an hour surfing the net on Ottawa!>:)

I have no idea how it compares to events in the States. The only event in the States I have been to was the VNEA Vegas tournament and nothing,IMO, compares (except perhaps the BCA).

In a nut shell, there are 4 Riley snooker tables and 8 Berringer 9 foots. The event plays as follows:

Thursday to Sunday - snooker
Monday to Wednesday - amateur mens and womens 9 ball
Thursday to Sunday - open mens and womens 9 ball
Saturday to Sunday - juniors

There will be about 40 players in each division give or take.

I was looking at the Manitoba players and notices Berry McLean is in the amateur division. I wonder how they decide who is allowed to play amateur and who must play the open.

I'm not familiar with many of the players in the amateaur division, but if Berry plays anywhere near his potential, I'd bet he will finish high if not win. I once watched him beat Bustamante 11-6 in Winnipeg, although that was several years ago.

It was awesome to see that, and be able to watch Earl, Cory Deuel, Alex P., Ronnie Wiseman, etc. Unfortunately that was the only event they had with tons of big guns showing up. It was also before Erik Hjorliefson or Jason Klatt were old enough or good enough to pose a serious threat.

I'll pick Tyler to win the open division, although there are so many good players I wouldn't be surprised to see alot of faces in the winners circle.

Ok I will take a shot at explaining how the handicap's work and effect who can play in the amateur and not...

If you play on a tour that is sanctioned by the Canadian Billiards Association you will have a sanctioned Canadian handicap. There is no sanctioned tours in Quebec.

Should you not have a sanctioned handicap and the coordinators do not know you (Sue or Grace) then you will be open to play either division.

You must have a handicap of 7 or less to play in the Amateur. I know of several that are in the amateur that sure as hell are not 7's or under. More like 8's and 9's if not more.

Anyone cant simply pay the entry and play like here in the states? Is the players in this tournament the winners of a qualifer?

For the Canadians, it depended on the province you were coming from. In Ontario, there were qualifiers that you had to win. In Quebec, you were able to 'buy' your spot for the amateur (I'm not sure about the Open).

After all of the qualifiers and open spots, there were still 'open' spots that you could buy. So I guess if you had waited, you could have just purchased a spot, but that was not known at the beginning (at least we didn't know in Ontario).

There are so many good players in the open,my darkhorse pick would be Chris Orme,he seems to play well in the big tournies. In the ametures Tol Kuy would be a good pick,he could probly play in the open.Mike Patraweiz is my darkhorse in the ametures I have watched him thrash some pros in previous tournies,he should do well.

I'm looking forward to seeing John Morra play. I have heard a lot about him but am yet to see him.

I was at the snooker championships today. I thought they made the tables a little too tough. I know we don't want buckets, but we also don't want these guys looking like second rate amateurs either. I realize that I couldn't run more than 10 points on those tables, but the people stopping in to take a look don't.

How confident are you?I could make some serious money on you.:) Is the chart up for you yet?

I have a buddy putting up $20 on me for me. That's how confident I am!

Hey anything can happen but I am a strong underdog and the field is very solid. They will post the draw Wednesday night sometime. It will be on the www.snookerline.com link I added above. My draw will probably decide everything. Not like there are weak players but having Klatt, Morra, and Hewitt in your bracket could be asking a bit much.

I am not sure how accurate my line is anyway. I have yet to play on the Stan James tour, I will in Ottawa this year, so I am a real unknown. I only play on the SCAB tour and a local Terminus tour and in an 8 ball league.

That isn't to say the number should give me better odds. Just that I am an unknown. Just happy to be here! :)

I'd bet on you but it's illegal where I am. I hope you win though! Tournaments sure are fun! This is nine-ball right? What's your high run in nine-ball? Mine is nine balls.

Anyway, good luck Sponge! :)
