FINALS -

The Finals is a Race to Ten. The match between Taipai and Phil A was a great one, with lots of twists and turns. Someone shouted out from the stands as Ronnie took his final backstroke. I could hear it. It may have distracted him just a little - enough. What really cost the Pinoys was all the illegal breaks - you must drive three balls past the head string. Any balls pocketed also count. In this format you need to be able to run some racks. One rack at a time may not be enough to beat a strong team.

The Taiwan pair are brothers - Ko Pin-Yi the older at 22 and Ko Ping-Chun only 15! The kid has played great all week, well beyond his years. He seems to be having the time of his life, on center stage with his big brother. No shot flusters him and he just gets up there and executes perfectly shot after shot. Long, short, thin cuts, delicate position, big stroke shots; makes no difference, the kid has come through over and over again. They are also COMPLETE players, expert with the jump cue and having the ability to switch hands on ANY shot! What a huge difference that makes. They teach them well in Taiwan.

That said, no player has more heart than Dennis Orcullo (correct spelling thank you). What a great competitor he is, absolutely fearless and ready to take on anyone. I like Ronnie, but the absolute best pairing would be Lee Vann and Dennis. For my money the two best the PI has to offer.

Germany looks unbeatable right now, with only Taiwan in the same league. Ralf has the absolute best composure of any player on the planet (Dennis second). Steely nerves and zero emotion at all times. It may not be pretty, but these are keys to his success. Paired with another great player (who is his close friend) in Thorsten and they make a terrific team. Enough for now.
