2014 World 9-Ball Championship

SVB and Deuel, I thought so. These are the usual suspects who have more guts( and money?) to rumble with the Asians. They should have sent he entire Mosconi Cup team.

Amazing

This is pretty amazing! I think this rivals some of the best streams (in terms of coverage and quality) that I've seen from any sport.

While I understand that the cost of this may be prohibitive for most tournaments, I would have no problem paying $50-$100 for a stream of this quality during major events, especially if there was an option to see earlier matches on demand.

Where can I go to get a breakdown on how the tournament format works? I know there is stage 1 and stage 2 but I'm not really sure what that means.

I like some of the shirts that some of the players are wearing. They seem very supportive of their sponsors and look cool...

Stage 1 is the qualifier stage, with 128 players playing for 12 spots in the main event (2nd stage). Not sure how it works but there is a new format for qualifying in which players have up to three chances to qualify.

The 2nd stage consists of 116 invited players plus the 12 qualifiers, playing double elimination until the last 64, then changing to single elimination.

Looks like a good format and gives the players a few opportunities instead of losing one short race and being sent home.

warren kiamco is playing table 11, and kevin cheng(guy that won the white diamonds bb tourney) is on table 6.

The stream is just superfantastic. Quality is just beautiful and no breaks or burps in stream. They also have another camera for top down view.
Do not mind paying for such quality streams if they decide to charge in future though would prefer they keep it free

Baby Ko now playing on table 9. This kid is a monster :D

It looks to me like Stage 1 works as follows.

The 128 players are split into 4 groups of 32, playing single-elimination, alternate-break races to 7. The 4 winners from each of those 4 groups win a place in Stage 2.

Then the same 128 players (minus the 4 who have already qualified) are again arranged in 4 groups of 32, and the single-elimination races proceed again. This is the "2nd chance" part of Stage 1. Again, 4 winners emerge, to be placed into Stage 2.

Then the 128 players (now minus the 8 who have already qualified) are again arranged in 4 groups of 32, and the single-elimination races proceed for a third time ("3rd chance" part of Stage 1), resulting in the final 4 qualifiers for Stage 2.

So Stage 1 is essentially 12 32-player single-elimination tournaments, with each of the 128 Stage 1 players slotted into 3 of the tournaments.

Edit: An alternate way to view Stage 1 is that it is 3 consecutive 128-player (or, really, 128, then 124, then 120) single-elimination events (1st, 2nd, and 3rd chance), with the last 4 players in each event qualifying.

Those five players get a free pass into the main tournament, but any other Americans would have probably had to go through qualifying, which means nearly a week of additional expenses, just to battle it out for a less than 1 in 10 chance (12 out of 128 players) to qualify for the main tournament. Then, if you're lucky enough to get into the main tourney, you'd have to win another match just to get in the money (a measly $500). Pretty much impossible to recover expenses unless you get into the top 8 or higher, so it's easy to see why there are so few qualifiers from Europe/North America.

Not a team event. This is the individual World 9 Ball Championship sanctioned by the WPA.

games today will start at 10AM, Doha time. That's 3AM EST, and 3PM Manila/Beijing/Taipei.

Can't wait... looks like the Filipinos dominated the first day, and there will be some big matches coming up between them, the Taiwanese, and Japanese as well.
