Oh sorry to get your heart beating it's The world snooker championships :D they just announced $458,000 for the winner and a total annual prize fund of $12,000,000 , gotta hand it to Barry Hearn he's a genius and is now in the US working on some big Darts deals, apparently it's taking off big time.

Oh and if your considering changing games, here is a sample of some of the competition.

i have always been a fan of snooker, i love the game. But, sadly its not popular here in USA. I don't even know how many pool rooms in usa got a snooker table. Luckily, for me the pool room I play in (fargo billiards) got a snooker table. It was very kind of owner to accommodate it, considering not a lot of people know about snooker in our local area. Sometimes we get a game of golf going on it which is also super fun.
I think this trump guy has telescopic eyes, he makes crazy shots. I have seen him play before. He is one of the best around.

not easy to switch

It's been tried. IIRC Rempe and Mizerak both had a go at being competitive at snooker in England and both failed.

Its not easy to switch, be it from pool to snooker or vice versa. It needs a lot of dedication and practice time to master any type of game. I remember couple of players from snooker world tried to play pool in usa and did not do very good.

Woman have switched from snooker to pool with great success the best obviously being Allison Fisher

I think any American Pro that can make the trip & play in it should do so. If nothing else, it will be a learning experience & maybe turn it into a vacation. Who knows maybe some will even make a few Bucks...or is that Pounds....or Euros. Maybe they can turn into a European Pool Road Trip as well. JMHO

Comparing women and men are apples and oranges in pool. The women pro tour is soft, most of the women in it are B and C rated players which is like an APA 5 or 6 tops. I think there are a dozen who play at a really solid level in WPBA and could be called A players. You could take a lower ranked male pro player who is not even top 20 or 30 and they could beat the top women player.

Not many have really made a serious attempt to learn the game and certainly none of the top ranked, there is not much incentive but some players such as Chris Melling and Daryl Peach have adapted well.

Unfortunately it would end in tears I'm afraid, the standard is just too high. Unless you have a talented 10 or 12 year old that is willing to change over.

If I remember correctly the Miz did fairly well playing snooker with his pool cue in a multiple game challenge against Steve Davis. Davis did win the snooker but the Miz was not embarassed. He held his own. But you are probably correct. I doubt any pool player would want to make the change, but I'd practice up a bit & make the trip if I were them. But...I see the advantages to the the snooker stance, head position, & stroke. Many don't.

Regards,

How do you think Alex Pagulayan would fare? I think he's won Canadian snooker championships, but I have no idea whether that would make him competitive in Europe or not.

The Canadians currently has no pro level players, although he plays a pretty good game there are league level players in the UK that play to that level or better.

Regards,

I have heard this event quoted a few times and I did watch it once and was embarrassed for Davis he played so bad or maybe was instructed to play that bad whatever the case it is not indicative of the standard and Davis cannot even get through the qualifiers these days and he plays as good as he ever did.
I would have beat Davis if he played like that :)

Alex definitely could make the switch. But I think he'd need to put 100% into it and focus entirely on his snooker. Competition over there is so tough that being a great scorer is only a piece of the puzzle, you need to be an excellent tactical player as well. But all new professionals struggle on the tour these days, we don't see many over night stars (Ding Junhui is the most recent I believe) I think because the depth and strength of the tour is just so tough. Even Judd Trump took a few years to finally break through. So even if Alex had a horrendous first season, I wouldn't write him off.

For those that do not know snooker, 70% of shots are as hard as playing combination shots in pool. IMO it is hard to switch from pool to snooker, and extremely hard to be a pro in snooker, it requires not only cuing skill but lots of well and patience, focus . I love to ask Darren A one day, why is he playing pool when all the money is in snooker, the last 64 pays to each player higher that most top 1st prize in pool .
