2022 World Cup of Pool Draw: Thoughts and Predictions Thread

Per Matchroom: https://matchroompool.com/news/draw-made-for-2022-world-cup-of-pool/

A couple of interesting things about this draw, imo. Firstly, and unsurprisingly, no Team Russia. Geopolitics aside, it's unfortunate that Gorst doesn't get to shine in some of these Matchroom events.

On that note, I thought Matchroom may invite a Ukrainian team. There are some good Ukrainian players and given the inclusion of some teams like Serbia, Vietnam, Hungary, Hong Kong, etc., it would have been feasible, but no such luck.

Whatever happened to China? They're 3-time champs, most recently in 2018, and still have great players like Wu Jiaqing, Liu Haitao and Han Yu. Why have they disappeared from Matchroom events recently? Is it a Covid thing?

Seeding seems pretty off to me. Germany as #1 seems reasonable as they're defending champs and Filler is playing superhuman pool. But I think some teams are pretty overrated (Philippines[5], Singapore[6], Greece[8], Hungary[10]), while others seem very underrated (Taiwan[9], Poland[15], Netherlands[16]).

I get that Efren is the GOAT, but precise ball pocketing is not what made him the GOAT, and now he's basically coming out of retirement to play on 4-inch pockets with 67-year-old eyes. Is it really worth having him there considering how badly it could go? Matchroom could have easily picked Dennis Orcollo, who is playing well and would probably draw a lot of viewers who have been missing him ever since visa issues screwed him out of playing in the U.S. (same goes for Aranas). There are tons of great Filipino players who could contend to win it all with Biado, and it seems low for Matchroom to toss Efren into an event at this level just for ratings.

Some of the supposedly randomly drawn matchups look pretty fishy. Main examples are Great Britain A vs. Great Britain B, USA vs. Canada, and Greece vs. Cyprus.

I predict a Final Four of Taiwan, Spain, Austria and USA, and I'd make Spain the favorite to win it all. Who else has thoughts?

great post. yes, lack of (mainland) chinese representation is a covid thing.

i'm going with a germany repeat win, but tough to call. austria, taiwan are always super strong

I heard that Robocop was unavailable due to getting his USA visa thing straightened out.
It’ll be nice to have him back.

C’MON CANUCKS!!!!!!

My thoughts have been, assuming it’s Ouschan and He playing for Austria that they are the best TEAM players in the world together. But easily could be Germany repeating or one of the other high seeds winning.

Edit: I see it’s not He. My pick is Germany.

Actually I’m thinking it’s real possibility that Poland goes deep.

I think Austria has a tough first round draw with Finland, but if they can win, they have a good chance to go through to the semis.

In my opinion Spain is in the easiest quarter of the draw, since Britain is weakened by Darren's absence and splitting up their remaining players into two teams.
And although I have deep respect for Efren and I look forward to see him on the big stage, I think there are at least 2 or 3 philipinos, who would be a better choice.

Germany, although a big favorite, has some tough competition with the Netherlands and Taiwan...but I still go with Filler/Hohmann over the Kos.

USA has to be careful, since Poland will be strong and Hungary is my pick for some surprises this year.

Will be an interesting tournament for sure.

On paper, I'd call Team Spain the favorite. Sanchez Ruiz and Alcaide are both great players and they both medaled at the UK Open, so they are in good form.

Still. although they have a losable first match, I'm picking Team Austria (Ouschan and Lechner) to win this.

Should be a good one.

i think leaving peru out is a huge miss on MR's part. peru has tevez, a finalist in latest world 10-ball championship, and gerson martinez who is a very talented player as well.

in light of that, cyprus and marocco are pretty weird choices

Cyprus is Greece technically on the south side of the island. The north side is occupied by Turkey since 1973. It’s a complex situation there. I go every year. The 2 sides of the island are different worlds. My guess is MR picked it because of the Greek side. The Cypriots got a raw deal too I think. It’s complex. There’s a vacant city there-a no go zone since 73 when the occupation happened. There’s also a UN buffer zone down the middle of the island(I’ve walked through that a few times). It feels like there’s tension, but not presently. A potentially tense situation in the future.

All I know is the foods great and weather as well. I have a friend who’s lived there his whole life he’s 55. Nice place.

I'm going to enjoy the whole thing. Going straight thru to matchroom.live is the way to do it.

I agree. I'd say Spain is the favorite because Alcaide and FSR are both good players, they're both playing relatively well lately, and most importantly, they have great team chemistry and probably

This isn’t a knock on Spain at all.

But ask me this question 25 years ago and I’d have thought it was a million to one shot Spain would ever produce the talent that they have in pool.

They aren’t the dogs in the show.

I think Poland is pretty strong and has a lot of potential this year.
I really like Fortuński and Wojciech Szewczyk is pretty dang good.
But yeah I'm stoked, I love the world cup!
