Bury put a 40-3 thrashing on Pedro, and now they play again in the round of 32. Hugo plays Michael Nilsson from Sweden.

Thanks for that.

Nice achievement for Hugo...and Bury, wow.

The tables must be playing tough. Eddy Merckx Is the only one who averaged over 2, and no one else was particularly close. I wonder if match excerpts will show up on YouTube.

Here is the final of the Championship. If the link does not take you to the right time, the start is about 1:38:00 into the full stream. The commentary is a real treat with @Bert van Manen and Torbjörn Blomdahl.

TB is a Very good commentator.

At 2:46:27 Tran uses a bridge.

That's pretty uncommon from my experience.
Most of the carom halls i've been to don't have bridges available.

I think i've only seen that a few times before.
I don't watch nearly as much 3c as I used to.

I have seen Raymond Ceulemans shoot a similar shot -- no chance to make a normal stance -- by lining up the stick from the end of the table, putting the stick down on the cloth, walking to the side of the table (maybe the top of the picture for a right-handed player), picking the stick up carefully without moving it sideways, and shooting totally sidearm. His head was perhaps a foot away from being over the cue stick.

I used the technique two days ago at 14.1 when it was impossible to get a mechanical bridge in position for a similar shot. I was a little surprised when I made the ball. I had some help from chalk or ball marks on the cloth which told me where the butt of the stick had to be.
Isn't it illegal to set the cue down on the table in pool? Must be different with billiards. My understanding was that technically you weren't even supposed to take your hand off the mechanical bridge while getting it into position. Which is something I've done many times without being aware it wasn't allowed.

Maybe it's an obscure rule because nobody ever said anything when I did it before. But I assume a referee would be justified in calling a foul.

To the best of my knowledge, the "no letting go of the pool cue" rule was added about 1995 to thwart one particular player who would take a long time with his shooting process. Like put the cue stick down on the table and walk to the other end of the table to see what it looked like. There is no good reason for the rule.
Sounds like he was using the cue as an illegal aiming aid. I don't remember who the player was that prompted the rule against laying your cue down. Agree that it's one of those nit-picky kind of rules.

I've actually moved a cube of chalk sitting on the rail before that just happened to be in the same spot I was kicking at, just so I couldn't be accused of marking the table.
