2nd ball 8 ball break with phenolic tip

I have been experimenting with the 2nd ball break using my Sledgehammer (phenolic) & a rail break with some success. No scratches or miscues, but CB placement could be better.

1. Shall I persist with center ball hit on CB because of phenolic & concentrate on accuracy to improve CB placement?

2. or try to master use of English with phenolic?

3. or try water buffalo?

I'm working on it my self...I usually make balls hitting the second ball but I don't like the inconsistancy of the cue ball...Vegas is in couple of weeks for me so I've been working on new things! I graze the head ball on the way into the second ball...Hope this helps...
 
2nd ball

I have a Mace with a White Diamond Phenolic tip. I have a monster for a break and typically don't use the 2nd ball break. When the balls don't seem to be falling or I am scratching with a head ball break, I will turn to the 2nd ball.

I ended up buying an additional shaft with a normal tip from Rick Howard. The last few tournaments I have only used the shaft with a normal tip for breaking, even with a head ball break. I like the phenolic for slower tables and the normal shaft for faster tables. I feel I have much more control and I can still hit them pretty good.
 
Personally, I only use my phenolic-tipped break cue for hitting the first ball head-on. Second-ball breaking requires more draw than it's safe to apply with the phenolic tip. JMO
 
I use my Gulyassy/Samsara for a 2nd ball hit, and get plenty of draw, but I have to take some power out of the stroke and focus on really snapping the draw. It works for me with no complaints.

How much draw do you need? I can get just as much draw with my phenolic tipped Predator BK 2, as I can with any other Break Cue phenolic or other wise.

I am not sure of the exact material of the tip on my J/B cue (Varney says "Canvis Resin") but I have good luck with the amount of spin I can put on the CB, and I can really crack open the rack. However am usually not conserned about CB placement after the break on the side rail/second ball hits. I am just happy to keep whitey on the table, and out of the pockets.

2nd point is my choice. Since IMO English with a bit of draw is essential when hitting second ball breaks. Concentrate on proper hit and control because with such break power is not on the first place.
 
You might want to try this.

Take a piece of 60 grit sandpaper & light score the surface of the tip. Once the tip looks like velvet, instead of being shiny, you can apply all the chalk you want.
 
Simple solution

is what I do, use your regular cue for 2nd ball break. It is only a 2/3's to 3/4's speed break, and your regular cue's tip will provide better control of the cue ball.

Personally, I use low outside english, and pull it some.

This is the only break where I use my playing cue, all others I use my
J&J Break/jump cue.

No, kiddin'! My phenolic tip is a lot flatter than my other tips. I don't like the contact it provides on a low or hi hit. No harm in experimenting next time I'm practicing, though.

Canvas Resin is a phenolic. It's a canvas based phenolic as opposed to a linen-based or glass-based phenolic.
