3/8-10 pin difference

I'm not sure if this has been a thread or not. 3/8-10 pins vary with cue makers for different reasons. My question is, can a shaft from one style fit another style of 3/8-10? thank you.

Im not a cue maker but i have a McDermitt and i think the pin is a 3/8-10
pin. I bought a JD cue from the phill.. the cue has a 3/8-10 modified pin.

The shaft from the McDermitt will fit on the JD cue but the shaft from the JD
will not fit on the McDermitt. The threads are the same but the end of the pin is different.

No the threads are not the same.... If you go DZ cues website he has a cut away of the two pins in to wood and you can see the different in the two pins. I'am new to cue repaire so I have been reading up on things like this... Maybe one of our cue builders will come a long and go more in to depth on these pins. I would like to see what some of the pros have to say. THIS IS THE PIC FROM DZCUES WEBSITE

They still fit both styles. I use the same taps to do both styles. The sw style pin just has more contact area in the minor dia so it feels tighter

almostgood asked: "... can a shaft from one style fit another style of 3/8-10?"

The modified 3/8-10 (flat bottom) pin has a larger minor diameter than does the standard 3/8-10 pin (the type used on McDermott cues, for example).

This means that shafts made for the modified pin will fit on butts with the standard pin (with a bit of a sloppy fit until tightened down), but many shafts made for the standard pin will not fit on butts with the modified pin unless the minor diameter in the standard-pin shaft is enlarged a bit (which, I take it, is not a difficult modification).

I use the same methods on both pins. I still center drill to .250 then bore to .308-.310 and tap with the same taps. The the only problem I've encountered is sometimes an acme pin won't be drilled as deep as the modified pins need too be

sneakiest pete 3/8 - 10?

i have a sneakiest pete on the way to me and
i know that it has a 3/8-10 pin, but no idea if it is standard or modified.

does anyone know which kind it is so i can find an extra shaft that fits properly. (properly meaning snug & tight)

i have to wait until cue arrives so i can measure joint diameter, but if someone knows and can tell me, i can start looking.

thanks, -marlo

The one I have has a modified 3/8-10 pin made of G10. The minor diameter of the pin is about .308". The joint diameter on my cue is larger than average at about .860", but I have a hunch the joint diameters vary somewhat from cue to cue.

This is correct, I have a many of both and the modified pin will not fit in the standard tapped shaft.

much appreciated

great to hear that! i was hoping it has the modified pin as i prefer the hit/feel it gives to the cue.
as far as joint diameters go, i agree that they would more than likely vary with each sneakiest pete.

so if i may ask... what are your thoughts on the sneakiest that you own? [performance-wise]

thanks for the help, -marlo

As to performance, most any cue with a decent shaft and a good tip is capable of playing up to the user's full capabilities. The Sneakiest Pete is a nice sneaky for the money. The one I bought doesn't fully match the spec's I prefer, but I liked it well enough to have KOINNKID (his shop makes Sneakiest Pete's and TNT Custom Cues) make me a similar cue to my spec's.
