3/8 10 pin differences

I have a sly and a Frey... Both 3/8 10

I just got a 314 shaft.... The shaft goes on the Frey just fine... But on the sly, its extremely tight... I've put it on about a third of the way and stopped because its soooo tight... I took a look at the pins and the pitch seems to be taller on the Frey... Which makes sense... The threads on the sly are significantly shorter which makes the column of the pin thicker....

Can I go ahead and screw the shaft on without damage to it?

I wouldn't. You're really talking two different threads, even though they are both 3/8-10...different thread geometry and more importantly different barrel sizes.

Man!!! So not only do you need to match all the different pin sizes, you have to ask how thick the column is?!?!?!? Jeez

Yep. The flatter/shallow thread, fatter barrel type pin is a relatively recent addition in the marketplace as far as 3/8-10 goes. There are several makers now using them, but a lot also that still use the older style 3/8-10. It's a great pin imo.

Fyi, I have some 3/8-10 joint protector sets FS. They fit cues with the older pin style...I call them "Atlas style". They do not fit the Carmeli cue shown on the right, which has the shallow threads and a fatter barrel. They fit all the cues shown on left.

There may be some jp's on the market now that can accommodate both pin styles.

Thanks for the pics... Yes.. My sly has the newer pin... And my Frey has the older style.... DANG

sorry, didnt read the OP properly, didnt realise it was about JPs.
I was refering to shafts as I recently had a similar problem with shafts.
I also have a Frey, and my spare ( backup) shaft is a Sugartree.
Both fitted on my Frey until I changed the pin for a G10, then
after I changed the pin the Frey fitted but the Sugartree did not, I had to run a tap down it , then it was fine

I recently got a Woodworth Cue and its also 3/8 10 but it looked very long so I got 2 shafts with it...I didnt want to spend $200+ for a LD shaft that might not screw in all the way. But 3/8 10 is a solid thick pin and I prefer it over the 5/18x18 piloted that I have on Palmers and an old Viking, the cue feels more solid.
