3/8 - 10 Shaft Inserts

I started making my own shafts about 6 months ago and have had some decent success. I'm getting ready to make a much fancier one this time around and want to use a 3/8-10 joint so that I can use the shaft with an existing butt I have.

Interestingly, while 5/16-14 and 5/16-18 inserts seem to be readily available, I have yet to find a source for 3/8-10 inserts. Any suggestions?

Inserts exist, but as stated above, it is more common to cut the threads directly into the shaft. You can use a threadmill if you have a CNC setup, or 3/8-10 taps can be purchased. You can cut the threads into bare wood, or make yourself a phenolic, or hardwood (like cocobolo) insert to tap into.
Be aware there are two types of 3/8-10 pins - normal and flat bottom. You can use the search function in this forum to look up more information about the differences.

Thanks. I'll just tap into the wood. My McDermott shafts, all 3/8-10, all have inserts so I was assuming that was the common method. I tried 5/16-18 direct into wood, no insert, and it got very loose after about 6 months of on/off. I just put a brass insert into that one to fix the looseness.

Note that it is more accurate to get the threads on center if you can either mill them with a thread mill or even single point them with a threading tool. Taps have a tendency to walk off center in wood because it is not dense enough to force the tap to center like in a dense metal. It's harder to keep the threads concentric with taps in wood.

I used to sell them in Brass, but quit making them after the Phenolic inserts pretty much made them obsolete.
